Question Getting the wrong notification sound

I'm still getting my head around my new phone (Redmi Note 13 with Android 14) and the notification sounds, but some apps are using the default tone rather than the one I have selected for the app. For instance for WhatsApp I have set the notification tone for messages and for groups to 'B' but it plays my default tone 'A'. I'm not sure what it is I am missing... :(

Solution
Ok, making progress! So go back to the menu for your Gmail account (in the Gmail app's settings), and select Inbox Notifications. Toggle on "Notify for every message", and see if that helps.
Did you do a google transfer of all your data from your old phone to the new phone?

Or did you do a clean install and reinstall all your apps individually on the new phone?

Did you log out of whats app in your old phone?

I know that if you transfer app data from old phone to new phone, it's not always "clean" and bugs can appear.

Uninstall whats app and reinstall and see what it does? You may have to set up again and restore old chats. Do you have backups of your old chats?

Thanks! I transferred all my apps and data. I think I was automatically logged out of WhatsApp on my old phone. I lost all my old chat which was not a problem, and only have a couple of new ones which I won't miss when I reinstall. I'll let you know how I get on.

I reinstalled WhatsApp but it made no difference then looking at your post I realised I hadn't given WA access to my media files. I've done that now and it appears to work. That is, it worked once. Finger crossed it will still be working next time I get a WA message. :p
That was my next question to check permissions. Fingers crossed that it works and sticks

Not sure if this should be a new thread or not...

I am not getting audio notifications from Gmail. All other notifications seem to come through but no sound. I've checked the settings goodness knows how many times, although I can't see where to check permissions for Gmail.

Go to Settings>Apps, select Gmail, then Notifications. Tap the word Mail (not the toggle), then make sure it's not set to Silent. Then tap Sound and select a tone there -- does it play a sample for you?

Thanks. Selecting Settings > Apps gives me the following options

I've tried most but seem to go round in circles and I can't see the word Mail you mention.

Do you see an email notification in your status bar/notification panel? I ask because if you don't, that would suggest the email app isn't even sending you a notification -- this could be due to the system killing the app in the background, so that it's not able to give you the notification in the first place.

Yes, and just to confuse things further I have received a couple of emails today where I think I received an audio notification - I don't think there were any other notifications at the time - but it was the default tone not the one I've selected for emails.

My mind just boggles 🙃

Hmm -- that last screenshot says "Email", but this was the screen that showed up when you selected Notifications on the app info screen for Gmail, right? Just want to make sure we're not confusing the Gmail app with any stock Email app that Xiaomi might have preinstalled.

I do get the feeling I'm being taken round in circles sometimes! I hadn't thought of an mail app, but I can't seem to find another one.

This is a screenshot of what I get from Settings > Apps > Manage Apps > Gmail > Notifications

I edited your screenshot to blot out your email address that was partially visible at the bottom.

Tap the word "Sound" (and not the toggle) -- does that bring up another menu?

Sorry I'm having you do all of these steps. The problem is that Xiaomi has its own menu tree that's different from the Pixel or Samsung's, so I can't reproduce what you see on my own devices.

Oops! Thanks for that!

Tapping on sound - long or short tap - just toggles sound on and off.

When I said I seemed to be going round in circles, it was with all the menu options, not with what you're asking me to do. I really appreciate your help.

Hmm, let's approach this from a different direction. Open the Gmail app, then tap the 3-line menu button at the upper left, scroll down and tap Settings, then tap your Gmail account. Now tap Notification Sounds. Can you choose a different tone there and see if it works?
