Thank you all for your contributions to this android community. This is my first post but I have utilized the information here over and over. Thanks for sharing.

I recently got a Galaxy Nexus (yay!) and passed along my incredible to my husband who had lost his in the woods. I was planning on getting him a Nexus for xmas but he just rooted the incredible and hasn't put it down since. He hasn't even been interested in my Nexus, so now I'm having second thoughts. I just wanted to see what you all thought. Should I get him the Nexus or is this rooted incredible as awe inspiring as he seems to think it is?

Are you going to buy off contract or on? If off contract, just wait and see how long he likes it :-). The Incredible is a great phone that he'll be sure to enjoy.

If he picks up on the Nexus then get one for him a little later down the road.

At this point I'd have to do off contract unless I added it as a new line and then did a smart for dumb shuffle and just ate the $240-$300 that it would cost for an additional line for the length of the contract. I'd hate to see that cost every month though and it would make a gift seem less gift like.

I guess I just haven't been brave enough to experiment with rooting so it's cool to watch him get excited about it. On one hand I don't want to kill that excitement. On the other hand I don't want to get him a dud gift when I could get him a nexus.

I know within six months there'll be "The Next Big Thing" and the nexus will be on ebay so maybe I'll just wait. That means I have to go back to the drawing board for a gift though :-\

Getting an added line is throwing money away. Also let them get the bugs out before jumping to buy it. Stick with a reliable established smartphone. And if anyone is in disagreement plenty will be....this is my opinion.

I think this answers your question. If he is that into his phone, why bother getting a new one? Wait until you need one. :D

Personally I'd go ahead and get him the nexus. Its top quality and ICS is amazing as far as features and as far as rooting they already have achieved that. The Google branded phone's take very little time to get rooted usually and the nexus was no exception as some of the lucky few who had the chance to get them prerelease had already accomplished this.

There really is no comparing the nexus to any of the other devices out. The processor may not seem as highly spec'd as some of the other devices on the market but its just as fast, if not faster, with a much snappier user interface thanks to the full hardware acceleration. As far as camera goes it might also have slightly lower mega pixel count compared to some of the other devices out but with the 0 shutter lag and the rest of the camera's hardware it easily keeps up and in some cases outdoes the higher megapixel cameras out there. Not to mention when it comes to the screen quality nothing compares to samsungs tech in that area plus it has one of the largest phone screens on the market.

Initially there were a few bugs with the Ice Cream Sandwich OS on launch but updates have erased most of these problems. The biggest issue for most came from low sound levels which the update was said to fix even then most went ahead and got one of the many volume booster apps from the market which easily remedied this issue.

All in all the nexus is the absolute top of the line right now and with the google branding behind it updates for the phone come blazing fast most of the time, other devices may outclass the nexus in certain aspects but as a total package it can't be beat. I have only had the opportunity to go hands on with the nexus for about a day and a half as a friend was kind enough to let me take the one he bought outright before the US release home after getting his second one and see if it was all it was hyped up to be and just within that short time I almost went ahead and bought it from him at the full price he paid which was $799 just because of how amazing of an all around package it really is only thing that held me back was needing the money for gifts for the fam with christmas coming up.

Truly your husband is one lucky man to have you even consider getting him such an awesome gift for christmas.

On a similar note a few more considerations for gifts in the tech department for him could be a galaxy tab or the new motorola tabs as they are all supposed to be getting updates to ICS early 2012 and they are amazing platforms for gaming and watching videos on. The galaxy tab is second to none right now at least till the new asus transformer comes out and what time I spent with the moto tabs I definitely would consider a purchase of any of the current 3 they have.

Hopefully my post helped you make up your mind about it and hopefully whatever you decide to get him he'll be happy with. If you do happen to get him the nexus or one of the others I mentioned it'd be very cool if you post back after he gets it and let us know what he thinks. Happy holidays and good luck with the gift.

It really is a good phone minus some minor bugs. But yes again if he is having a good time on his incredible no need to get something else. He may really love HTC and sense. Off contract is pretty expensive and I'm sure you can buy a much more worthy gift for under 650$.

Out of curiosity what update fixed the volume issue cause mine still stinks?

Like I said it was "supposed" to fix the volume issue among other things. For some they say it helped and they no longer need the volume boosting apps others saw no change in volume at all. As far as the apps helping the ones that actually will help you need the paid versions of to be able to boost it enough to make a difference as most of the free ones only go to like +4db which is almost no difference at all really while the paid versions usually go somewhere around +15db.

Jeez, do you work for Samsung? Or Google? Hahaha. Seriously though, this is a great pitch for the Nexus, and, I'm quite interested in the phone myself, but, they weren't asking for a review of the Nexus, they were asking for an opinion on whether they should get the Nexus, or, just keep using their rooted Incredible. I know you strongly feel they should get a Nexus, and, definitely offered a valuable assessment of the device, but, it kinda seems like you are missing the point here.

Why would you pay 700 or 800 bucks for a phone off contract when they "haven't put it down since." Just seems like it would be a waste of money. Would I love to have a Ferrari? Sure, of course I would. But, my current car is meeting all of my needs, and, upgrading would be a waste of resources.

I don't strongly feel they should go one way or the other which is why I did add some cheaper options at some good tech gifts, the reason I went into so much detail is there is just so much hazy info out about the nexus so I wanted to give my clear feelings of the device compared to all others I've used. Which is a ton, I have had the privilege of testing the infuse 4g, sgs2 and the skyrocket variation, nexus s, epic 4g, dinc2, most of htc's lineup, the new razr, and a fair chunk of the newer tabs on the market among others. On top of that I've had more android devices than I can count in the past couple years so my opinion on them is fairly unbiased towards one company or another.

As far as not being able to put it down, I've been that way with everyone of my android powered devices, it really means jack. I remember the first time I rooted a device and guess what I couldn't put it down either. That definitely doesn't mean I didn't want an upgrade to the newest top of the line piece of hardware at the time, its just what I had to play with and mod till upgrade time and I was able to start dev'ing for something new. This cycle has simply repeated itself ever since. So if the OP has the cash and wants to get him one why not, there's always a return period so if he doesn't really like it take it back and use the cash to get him some new accessories or a different gift altogether. Just make sure wherever your buying it from has a good return policy that will refund your cash and not just store cred or some other nonsense.

Well, the info was definitely good, and, it's nice to get an opinion from someone who has used so many different devices.

I guess we are just different then. I love my phone, and, if someone gave me a better one for free, sure, I'd take it. But I couldn't justify paying retail for a new phone just because there was something better out there. I'd be getting a new phone every week if that were the case, hehe.

Yea, I mean, if the OP wants to, that's their call. Maybe they should add a poll or something. Looks like we've got one vote for yes and one vote for no already. :D I just know that if someone gave me 800 bucks right now, I wouldn't run out and buy a Nexus. I'd buy something to fill a niche that I don't already have filled, something like that. Each to their own though.

I definitely get what you mean and I do agree, if I was handed the cash I would probably buy something else too, most likely a new amp or guitar, just because I already have enough devices to play with and make mods for as it is, well at least till its upgrade time again if someone wanted to get me one as a gift though I would be the happiest geek ever on christmas.

The OP on the other hand was on the ropes about what to do and even though they already have a nexus I thought it best to clarify on some of the info going around about it and give my personal thoughts on it with all the other devices I've had the opportunity to use.

A poll is actually a great idea, I wouldn't recommend the OP use that as the definitive answer as to get it or not but just as advice just like we have both given.

Well, yea, for sure, I wouldn't turn it down as a gift, but, wouldn't you rather have that new amp or guitar as a gift?

Well, the OP has a Nexus, so, I'm sure they know whether or not they like the phone, ya know? ;)

I'm not sure if you can add one after the fact, but, it would be good to add one, or, create a new thread with one. Yea, I mean, both the poll and the advice are absolutely important. I generally vote and then add some input in threads. I rarely just vote and leave. :D
