Gingersnap Root Utility (one-click ROOT!!!) Multi-Platform

You do not need winzip or any other program to extract zips in windows xp.

The drivers are not installed from your phone: a quick forum search should help you find them.

Whenever I try to open the GingerBreak.tar file it sends me to three different zipped-file extractor programs. I have the LG Optimus drivers on my computer now. Found em before I went to sleep.

OK, I just read all of the posts on all 18 pages because I too was confused. I think the reason for the vast number of posts (and confusion) is due to a lack of detailed installation instructions.

Being that I am a network engineer/tech writer by trade (but a total noob with Android phones), I thought I'd document the entire process from start to finish. I hope this eliminates any further confusion and perhaps the OP might consider link to this post in his original post.

Here goes (first draft)...

On your Windows PC:
1. Download and install Microsoft .NET 4 Framework (dotNetFx40_Full_setup.exe).
2. Download and install the Visual C++ 2008 redistributable (vcredist_x86.exe).
3. Download, unzip, and install LG?s USB drivers for the Optimus S (LGLS670.zip). They are located under the MOBILE DRIVERS section; scroll down to Sprint.
Note: Don?t get confused by all the other drivers and LG apps like the ?LG Mobile Support Tool to PC?. You only need to download and install LGALS670.zip (13.9MB).
4. Download and unzip the latest Gingersnap Root Utility.
5. Reboot your PC.

On your phone:
6. Remove battery, wait a minute then reinsert.
7. Power phone ON.
8. Under Settings > Applications > Development, check the USB Debugging checkbox.
9. Connect your phone to your PC using the correct USB cable.

On your PC:
10. Allow your PC to detect the phone and load all the Windows drivers. Wait for the ?your hardware is ready to use? alerts. There may be more than one, so wait a good minute before proceeding.
11. Locate and run Gingersnap.exe.
12. Click Go. The interface should show ?Stealing the ginger?s soul??.
13. Wait, wait, wait. For me, it took 17 minutes for the process to complete.
14. Gingersnap will display ?The ginger?s soul has been stolen.? And a pop-up alert reading ?The rooting process is complete and your device is now rebooting. You man now exit this utility.? is displayed. The phone will automatically reboot.
15. Click Quit on the Gingersnap Root Utility.

On your phone:
16. Check your list of apps. You should see a new one named ?Superuser? with an icon showing an Android skull and crossbones.

On your PC:
17. Bring up a Command Prompt in Windows (Start > Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt).
18. At the command prompt, change the directory over to where you have Gingersnap unzipped.
19. Run the ADB (Android Debug Bridge) Shell by typing ?adb shell? (without the quotes) then press Enter.
20. You should now see a ?$? prompt.
21. Type su then press Enter.

On your phone:
22. Immediately check your phone. You should see a Superuser request displayed. Tap Allow.
23. ?Unknown has been granted superuser permissions? is displayed.

On your PC:
24. You should now see a ?#? prompt in the Command Prompt window.

On your phone:
25. Launch the Superuser app. Under the Apps tab, you should see ?Unknown? listed. You just confirmed that your phone is rooted!

On your PC:
26. In the Command Prompt window, type exit then press Enter. Repeat this to exit and close everything.

Now, go download and install a custom recovery and ROM (which I intend on doing next).

This was a nice walk through. Any other noobs like me, make sure you unzip Gingersnap directly to your C drive.

worked great once i realized i needed:
a path to the sdk tools in the windows environment variables
and an sd card must be the phone

Thanks for all your work!

I'll update my post to reflect this.

an sd card must be the phone

Can someone else confirm this? I originally removed mine, but then again I didn't wait for more than 5 minutes before I quit the app. I later reinstalled my SD card, but what finally got it to work for me was to wait 17 minutes.

If an SD card is indeed required in order to root the phone, let me know and I will update my detailed instructions which I posted earlier in this thread.

Yeah it's generally accepted that an SD card is needed in order for it to work, but your mileage may vary. Oh, and extracting Gingersnap to the root of the C: drive is NOT a requirement.

All it does is unroot it. If u added a custom recovery or a custom rom then u have more to undo than just root

Took me six attempts. Four on first XP machine, two on another XP machine. Finally got it done successfully. Thanks for the tool

Having trouble here, and didn't see anyone else with the same problem.

Trying this out on Ubuntu 10.04. When I run the program and click on "Root," it jumps right to "Rebooting device," and nothing happens either on the phone or in the program.

Anything that I'm clearly doing wrong? I've tried about 10 times. Once it got stuck on "Applying exploit;" I closed the program after being on that for a little over 5 minutes. I'm also rebooting in between attempts, FWIW.

Thanks in advance for the help.

I would be willing to bet that your udev rules aren't set correctly. I totally forgot to add this into the requirements (mainly because mine had already been set so I didn't think about this). I will add instructions as soon as I wake up in about 6-8 hours. Thanks for letting me know!

EDIT: Looks like they actually fixed this bug in Ubuntu versions > 10.04. I'll make a note for this.

Some more information would be good. Do you have the correct drivers installed? Is USB debugging turned on?

Download LG Mobile Support Tool to PC

(after that is installed, click on the were it says usb drivers, make sure usb debugging is enabled)

Ok I can't seem to get the drivers installed correctly. I have run the LG Mobile Support Tool but when I click the Install USB Driver button, my model number isn't shown in the list when choosing Sprint as the carrier. My model number is LS670 and I am using Windows 7 32bit. Does anyone have the correct driver for this combination? When installed correctly, what should the phone be listed as in the device manager?

Thanks

I've tried this tool on 2 separate computers, one a Windows 7 x64 based platform and the other Mac OS X 10.6.8 x86 based platform, neither times worked (obviously).

I have the drivers installed for the Win based computer and I have the USB Debugging enabled. I've restarted the phone before each attempt and still no dice.

What happens is (on both computers) it does the preparing and moving of files but when it gets to "Executing exploit. could take awhile" it just sits there. I've left it for over 10-15minutes on that screen and nothing changes.

I have noticed when it initally starts and gets to that step my phone seems to unmount my SD card (if that helps).

It's android 2.2.2 and the ZVD software version.

Any ideas?

EDIT: finally worked after trying several times on Windows based computer and then going to the Mac computer again (I tried several times on the Mac, then tried the Windows computer, and then tried the Mac again and it finally worked)

The model number should be LS670, as you said. I don't specifically remember, but it could also be LGLS670.

I see mentions of the LG Mobile Support Tool. I have downloaded this also and as far as I can tell LGLS670 or variant thereof is not included in the Mobile Support Tool. I did find another place on LG's site where you can get the drivers. I will post the link here shortly. The following are the conditions in which i have attempted to run Gingersnap: All attempts are on the device i previously stated running Win 7 HP 32bit.
1. Running Gingersnap with usb debugging enabled on phone.
2. Running Gingersnap with usb debugging and sd card unmounted.
3. Running Gingersnap with the above stated and under compatibility mode for XP SP3.
4. Running Gingersnap with the above stated and under compatibility mode for XP SP2.

Under all these conditions, Gingersnap seems to run like it is supposed to but nothing seems to be happening on the phone. When Gingersnap runs and states that it is moving files, I am curious as to exactly where these files are going in my case as nothing is happening with the phone. I have allowed for several minutes after each attempt for the phone to reboot with no success.

drivers for LGLS670 can be found here: http://www.lgforum.com/resources
