Gmail android app will not turn off conversation view even when unchecked in general settings

I am trying to turn off the conversation view in the gmail app on a Galaxy s7. Have unchecked the conversation view box in general settings but made no difference. Also emails will not delete from phone when deleted on web browerser. Does anyone have a solution for this.

It's not possible. The conversation view box in settings is for POP/IMAP accounts and not native Gmail.
The only solution I've seen is to switch to Outlook Mobile which is actually pretty good.
