Gmail app constantly restarts

I can't check my emails because everytime I open my gmail app I get the following error message, "Unknown issue with Google Play services". I have cleared cache and restarted to no avail. The app is version 5.0.

Additionally, I constantly get a notification that says "Unknown issue with Google Play services. Requested by Google Play services."

That's current. Does the issue persist after a reboot?

Yes it does. I even tried to uninstall all gmail updates and that didn't work.

Try wiping the system cache partition: http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-5744

Also, make sure the Samsung security updates are current. Go to Settings>Security ​and look for that option.

I wiped the cache partition and security updates are up to date and neither fixed the issue.

I found another option and it seems to have fixed the problem at the moment. Here is what I did.

1. go to setting > security>device administrators
2. uncheck android device manager
3. go to app and uninstall update google play service
4. open gmail app which requires you to update google play service. click update
5. after update, open gmail app to verify the error is gone
6. back to setting>security>device administrators and check android device manager
