Gmail app now takes me to...Kindle??

Edited to say that the problem described below fixed itself. I don't know why, but after installing the new Swype beta, my gmail works again. I hate when this kind of thing happens.

****

I've had my Incredible 2 since September and have been using Google's gmail app to access my three gmail accounts. All was well until last night when clicking either on the widget or the icon in the app list suddenly starting bringing me to the Amazon Kindle sign-in page. I've never used a Kindle or the Kindle app. I've tried uninstalling the gmail app, clearing all its data, and reinstalling it again, and although opening it from the Market install page brings up my gmail accounts, when I later tap the widget or try to open it from the app list, it again brings me back to the Kindle page.

The one thing I did last night was to turn off notifications for my gmail accounts because they're distracting; I'd rather open the app to check email than to have it 'ching' at me. As far as I know I didn't make any other changes.

Any ideas?

This started happening again and I came back here to seek help. When I first tried to submit a reply to ask for help again and hit 'submit,' the very intelligent Android Central suggested looking a few threads. One referred to rooting a phone to uninstall 'the Kindle bloatware.' I went to the app manager and was able to force quit and delete the data, but I apparently can't uninstall it. However, once I quit and deleted the data the Gmail app started working right again. So I'm blaming Kindle.

Now I've got a different question: does anyone know how to permanently disable the Kindle app without rooting the phone or scare technical stuff like that?

There are app freezers which can delete / freeze system apps like Kindle, but require root.. Other then that there's no way to uninstall apps like that without root.

Any idea whether there's a setting to keep it from doing this? If not I guess I can keep killing the Kindle app, but it seems unlikely that it was designed to behave this way.

When I was stock, I never had a problem with Kindle like that. Is there an update for it or have you done a fresh install of the Gmail app?

I've uninstalled and reinstalled the Gmail app several times, and it's on automatic updates and has been updated since I first installed it. I think the Kindle app automatically initializes on startup, so I have to force quit it whenever I restart the Dinc, which isn't that often. It could be worse.

I may swing by the Verizon store and see if the clever guy there has an idea, but he's not likely to have heard of this, either.

Perhaps there's another Gmail app out there that's as easy to use (simpler is better)?

I use the mail app off the phone for all my emails so I don't use the gmail app itself, although I'm sure there are others.. But I think a factory reset would solve the problem, but that might not be necessary for such a small problem.

I tried this last night and voila, it works fine. I'd had some trouble figuring out how to set up Gmail accounts using the native Gmail app when I first got the device, and the Market app worked from the get-go, so I stuck with it. Now that it's bugged up I'll dump it and use the stock version.

Thanks for the suggestion--this was definitely a DOH! moment.
