Gmail Label Questions

Hey all. I recently went through the how to posted on AC about running your POP email accounts through Gmail so I am not wasting battery life every 15 minutes checking for new email in the Stock Mail App.

1. I created labels for my new email accounts in gmail and placed them on my desktop. Is there a way to get a notification on the icon itself? ex. on the stock mail app when you get an email you get a green dot with a number in it showing how many messages are in your acount. Is there a way to do that with the lables so I know which email account I got the message in?

2. This is a newbie question but I'm coming from a BB and this is totally new for me. When I select my Label and go into settings, what are the syncs and what do they mean? Ex. if I select my 'Zoom' label which is my personal email and go Menu>Settings>Labels>Zoom, Sync None is selected. What is it syncing?? Why is the inbox set to 4 days??

3. In the Stock Mail App, can I delete my email accounts in there so I'm not getting messages in that app also? I don't see a way to turn off Receiving unless I set it to check it manually.

If anyone can shed some light on these it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a bunch.

1. You can download the "GMail Unread Count" widget by Alexander Blom from the Market to get an unread count on the Gmail icon. You just remove the shortcut for the Gmail app on your homescreen and replace it with this widget. I use it, but one thing I don't like about it is that it always takes you into a new unread message, rather than into the list of messages (can't seem to disable it).

2. In settings > labels, you can set the default number of days to sync at the top ("Number of days to sync"). I'm guessing yours is set to 4 (I can't recall if that is the default). Change it to whatever you think appropriate. You can then have it sync that number of days for each label (or sync all or none). (Note: Syncing means that a copy of the message is stored on the phone, not just on the server. "Sync none" means that the phone will not cache any messages locally -- so every time you view that label, it will pull down the list of messages from the server.)

3. I only have one exchange account, so I'm not sure about deleting accounts. But you should be able to delete accounts by accessing the account you want to delete in Mail, then going to Menu > Settings > Delete Account. Either that or (from the home screen) Menu > Settings > Accounts & Sync.

Hope that helps!
