Gmail Notification Overactivity

My gmail app seems to be overly sensitive to changes in my inbox. It notifies me of course when I get a new email or one in a conversation stream, which is great. But it also notifies me if I delete emails or read one and mark it as unread from my desktop. The worst part is, it even notifies me if I read an email and mark it as unread from the gmail app on my phone. I'll exit my inbox, receive a notification that I have a new email, and open it only to find nothing new. Any advice on how to make it so that only new emails trigger the notification?

So no one who has had this issue has found any way to fix it? I tried uninstalling all updates and that did nothing. It's not a bad enough problem that I want to try a factory reset, but if anyone has an idea of something to try that would be great.

Have you tried to clear data for the GMail app? (Menu, Settings, Applications, Manage Applications, GMail)

It was going nuts this morning for me too, but it calmed down now. One thing I've learned with Google: they're endlessly tinkering with their side of things, and sometimes there can be weird consequences on our end. Last week, no YouTube video would load without retrying it once and Reader was slow. Both problems resolved themselves. This week, they're probably doing something with Gmail.

Trying setting notifications to only notify you once instead of every new email.

Just tried clearing the data and tested it out: same results. I also double checked that I have it set to notify only once per email and I do. Thanks for the suggestions, though.

At first I also thought that it was just google messing around on the back end, but it's been going on for about a month now.

Mine does the same thing. Doesn't matter which ROM I'm on.
