gmail on Huawei Ascend Mate 2 giving message "connection problem". Does anyone have a solution?

For the last 10 days, my gmail account has not sycned any new messages. When I try to "refresh" the message I receive says "connection problem" with no further explanation. Have been searching for a solution for nearly 2 weeks and no one seems to have a clue of how to fix this. Help anyone?

Welcome to Android Central! Does that happen on both wi-fi and mobile data? Do other Google apps work correctly?
