Gmail on Huawei Smartwatch

I received my Huawei Smartwatch yesterday and do not always seem to get notifications on the watch when new email arrives. Right now I have 4 unread Gmail messages on my phone but cannot find any notifications on my watch.

My phone is a Verizon based Galaxy S5 still running Android 4.4. I am running the Gmail app on my phone. Any suggestions? I have been hesitant to upgrade to a newer Android rev based on the horror stories that I have read, but will do it to resolve this problem.

Another basic question regarding email being sent to the watch - do I only need to have the Gmail app on my phone or do I also need to enable the email app (Email) that came with the phone? I am unsure which app sends email to the watch. How does the watch "know" which email app on my phone to communicate with?

Thanks for your reply. I think I also figured out why I was getting some notifications on my watch for some Gmail messages and not others. I was not getting notifications when I had my Gmail app on my phone running and the screen was visible. As soon as I either closed the phone's Gmail app or put the phone to sleep,the notifications went to the watch. Am I correct?

Yes. You can set it up that way, or have it ring both even when you're on the phone.
