gmail stays in conversation view and I do not have conversation view checked

I very much dislike conversation view for Gmail. My Galaxy S2 tablet shows conversation view ONLY. I do not have conversation view checked in setting on my tablet nor on my desktop. One fix I read said to uninstall gmail from tablet, check imap enable on my desktop and then reload on the tablet. First, my desktop setting is already IMAP enabled, and second I can't figure out how to uninstall gmail from the tablet. There is no GMAIL in APS settings. help!!

Why not just disable the Gmail app and use the much better Email App?
