gMail sync issues

I received about 15 emails from the same person on my gmail account. I deleted some of the emails using my laptop and now I have 3 left. Why does the N4 gMail still show 15? BTW is there any way to delete some of these emails from the same person on the N4. I tried it once, but all 15 deleted instead.
