Gmail sync problem on "data" on Samsung Galaxy S5

I wonder if anyone can help with this issue I have, I have Samsung Galaxy S5 and prefer to use the Gmail Android app, it works fine under wifi conditions but as soon as I switch to "data" connection it just stops. I can get around the problem by switching off the Gmail app alerts and turn on the "default" phone email app and then I get alerts as normal when out and about. As soon as I get back to wifi as soon as I turn off the default email app and turn gmail alerts back on with a few seconds I get the gmail alerts

So something somewhere is stopping gmail from receiving on "data" when I'm away from wifi

This started a few weeks ago, it seems to happen everywhere, including roaming on foreign networks

If I manually search for new mail on Gmail app it picks them up if I swipe down and then I get the mails.

I have an old S3 sitting in my home and that works fine always

I think I've checked every possible setting there is, cleared all cache uninstalled / re installed, always the same result, even rebooted in recovery mode and cleared cache

Anyone got any tips I can try?

Many thanks

Is it possible that when at home....the one phone is working as a "hotspot"? If it's always at home ;have you checked that for use with mobile data too ?
I'm just wondering if you ought to visit your Google Account to check that both devices are authorized. Don't know if you've paid a visit in the last month or so ,but there have been lots of changes recently......might be worth taking a look at your Account settings re Security, Privacy etcetera.

Re: Gmail sync problem on "data" on Samsung Galaxy S5

Thanks for the reply, all checked and seems ok. I only turn the S3 on to check the messages are getting through, it works fine each time. S5 still same, faultless on wifi, not receiving on data - weird (and annoying!)

Re: Gmail sync problem on "data" on Samsung Galaxy S5

Just a thought......have you got Android System WebView installed on one or both phones ?

Re: Gmail sync problem on "data" on Samsung Galaxy S5

It came pre-installed on my Moto E 2nd Gen.....can you uninstall it ?

Re: Gmail sync problem on "data" on Samsung Galaxy S5

I think I'd re-enable it .
When you're out and about is Chrome working okay ? Can you access GMail thro' it ?

Browser working fine, can access Gmail though it. When I know mails are waiting (on data connection) Gmail app will not display them until I physically "drag down" on the device, then - any only then do they become visible

Re: Gmail sync problem on "data" on Samsung Galaxy S5

Have you looked at/ thought of moving to Inbox by GMail.....it's got a few good reviews on the Play Store....lots of info in the Read More......it works in conjunction with GMail, so you wouldn't lose anything.....apparently more suited to those who have lots of mail to deal with.....if you didn't get on with it you could revert....and, who knows, it might sort out a few glitches in the process ?

Partial success! I installed "Inbox by Gmail" although it's doesn't alert me on data, it does the mails do show up without swiping

I got the "Gmail" app once only working by uninstalling updates, so if I run version 5.0.1 1642443 instead of 5.4.973373923, but ONLY if I have "Inbox by Gmail" installed on the phone!

It's now very poor at getting mails on wifi - starting to give up!

Re: Gmail sync problem on "data" on Samsung Galaxy S5

I've never run "Inbox" but the version shown on G.Play is 1.11(98361310) 24 July 2015.....Do you have to run the Gmail app alongside/ in conjunction with ?
My Gmail version shows as :- 5.4.97372923 (20 Aug 2015)
Android System WebView is shown as :- 44.0.2403.117 (11 Aug 2015 ) Did you re-enable it ?
I would have thought it would take some time for these apps to "play tidy" together. You might find it's better when you boot up tomorrow.

Re: Gmail sync problem on "data" on Samsung Galaxy S5

You can run Inbox and Gmail together but I'n not keen on it

Giving up on it all now, the annoying thing is that notifications on wifi which were very reliable come when they want or don't come at all

Re: Gmail sync problem on "data" on Samsung Galaxy S5

Can you have a look at Settings/Accounts....then tap on the three vertical dots ( top right )....is "Auto sync data " checked ?
