Gmail Sync/Push Issues

I'm having sync/push issues with gmail. I've cleared out the settings (cache/data), battery pull, the only thing i havent done is a hard reset as i dont know what that will delete/erase from my phone as far as saved data.

this is somewhat frustrating.. my first evo, battery kept dying after 6 hours, and the sprint store installed the task killer. they finally swapped out the phone for a diff one. batter life on this one is much better, without the task killer, but push email doesnt work. i can see it on my gmail account but the msg doesnt pop up on my phone until i refresh it several mins later. basically, it won't show up until i refresh. overnight, messages came to my gmail account, but nothing on the phone until i hit refresh and about 10 messages came in all at once.

This is irritating as it's one of the reasons i went from BB to Andrid - because android has push email via gmail.

Help me out pls! :)

What sorts of 'tweaks' have you done? Do you have always on mobile data turned off? -> Try leaving that enabled.

Does your google talk work? Have you tried it?

I have had the same problem for the last two days. I was using k-9 as my mail program because i read somewhere that the EVO did not have true push email and that if i used k-9 it would work. well it did work for about two weeks and then all of a sudden, no more push. I have now downloaded maildroid and seem to have push back. I dont know how to explain this, I also had talk off, i did not want to waste battery and was getting push fine without it . nevertheless, I tried logging in to see if it would make a difference and it did not.

edit, i take it back, does not seem to be pushing again. maybe gmail push is down?

In general sync settings, i have background data and auto-sync enabled.
Mobil data is always on via 3g. I avoid using the wifi as i've read that can affect the synching issue.

I have no need for google talk - it should work without using google talk i belive. I'm also using the native GMAIL app.. this is *Supposed* to have push email, one shouldnt have to use a 3rd party app.

no special tweaks on my phone. I've rebooted the phone and disabled any task killing app. The only other apps that i have really used is the web browser, handcent, spare parts (that is disabled), fring. I have gmail notifier and an gmail widget.

my 3 yr old curve was able to push emails better than this.

is there a way to reinstall the google mail app?

(yes, i'm frustrated.. sorry folks)

Thanks!

I have only had the evo for about 3 days but I have noticed the push gmail is a little slow. The first day I had it and was running it on my wifi at home, and it took 20 minutes for the device to register the email after I sent it to the account. Trying to fix my google calendar sync issue, I did a hard reset on the phone which deletes any downloaded apps, contacts not saved in google/facebook/etc, chat/text/phone logs, and will reset all your settings. Any songs you transfered will stay though, but everything else is just like when you pulled the evo out of the box on day 1.
I also read that wifi can cause the push to be slower, so I shut that off and did a few tests over the last couple days. Now I get anyhwere from 0-5 minutes for it to notify me, but it seems random (tried at morning, noon, evening, night). I set gTalk not to load up and sign out of it as I do not use IM features of the phone. I use the standard gmail app that came on the evo for my 2 gmail accounts. Since the gmail app is a core app, I do not think you can uninstall it to reinstall it. Hard reset may be your only option to reset the app.
I had the pre before this and that phone was very fast to push emails. Many times even before I saw them on desktop gmail client. I have heard that BB are the kings of push emails, but I personally have never owned one. I do hope we can find a way to get push to be consistently faster on the evo.

I had this exact same issue.

What fixed it for me was to have GTALK running (and signed in). I did some tests and confirmed that if GTALK is not running (and I'm signed in to it), then it takes sometimes five minutes to three hours to not at all for me to get the email (with Native GMAIL app). If I am signed in, I get it within a minute, if that.

Hey,i think its wifi. I turned off wifi and push has been instant now for the last hour.give that a try.

wifi causes problems if you've used it. i've had wifi off since i did a battery pull.

when i did a battery pull, i also cleared out the gmail data.

push was working pretty good for about a day then it went downhill.

Just out of curiosity, is there such an gtalk app for android? Just trying to get clarification - gtalk with another multi-im client?

I really dont want to do a hard-reset without saving all of my sms messages and what not. I have a lot of sentimental txt messages that I Want to hold on to.

Thanks everyone, keep the postings coming. I'm sure there's quite a handful of people having this issue.

Thanks!

i believe the stock is called talk. you could also use meebo im, if you want to back up, there is something called im chatlog, look for it in market, there may be others as well

Well I just watched an email come into my gmail account on my desktop from an outside source at 10:20pm. I set my phone next to me to see how long it would take until I got a notification. The phone finally beeped at 10:45pm, and also time stamped the email for 10:45 even though it was there at 10:20 in my desktop inbox. My gtalk is signed in, no wifi, I don't lose full-3g signal at my place, and I was not making any calls or using my phone at all. So it's a google OS with a horrible gmail app?? I am starting to lose faith in this phone.

welcome to my world, Paevo. I'm actually debating going back to my old blackberry until this is resolved.

are you using the stock email program? if you are download a probgram called k-9 mail..set the push to on, and poll to whatever back up you want. mine is set to hourly. I cant find the refernce i saw on the boards here but if it was correct , the stock email that comes with EVO does not recieve push, it polls every 5 minutes or whatever it is set to. also I searched yesterday for gmail push outages and it seemed as if gmail was up and down over this weekend with lots of people reporting problems with push. I would give this a few days to work its self out and re test. also, do try the k-9 program, it has an integrated inbox for multiple accounts

I am also having issues with both the Gmail and "mail" (used for Exchange) apps. Neither is pushing mail at the moment. Just got the phone last week. It pushed mail nonstop on Thursday and stopped suddenly on Friday.

UPDATE: OOPS, Sync was turned off in the general settings.. Clearly, I am still learning. I checked the account settings five times, but just stumbled upon the general settings option. I still don't know how it was disabled.

There has been other threads discussing push for Gmail. I haven't verified this but I believe you need Google Talk running to properly get push to work with Gmail. Since you state you had/have a task killer, it may be disabling Talk.

You can tell gtalk not to load up at start, and hit "Sign Out" in the menu but it doesn't mean anything. The app loads regardless and seems to stay signed in regardless. So I set task killer to ignore it and the regular gmail app. I am going to give the stock gmail app a chance after this update and hope that it fixed it. Then I will try K-9 and see if that is better. I am at least using this phone for the next 2 weeks until I get a refurbished pre because mine died. So if this is a freak occurance it will have its chance to prove it.

I tried an email from my spam account (different than gmail) and sent a message to my gmail account after the update. I timed when I saw it in the desktop gmail inbox to when my phone notification went off. It took less than 10 seconds! So hopefully this is a start to how things were supposed to be from the get go.

Just curious but have yall tried this? Go into widgets and add the power control widget to one of your screens. Then, make sure the "recycle" icon is lit up? That seems to constantly refresh gmail settings for me.
