GMail sync, updating and shortcut problems

I know there have been a few threads about this in other forums, especially in the general help section, but much of them lead to dead ends or the very unhelpful post "no problem with mine."

So, I have a couple of issues with the GMail application. I have the default account and an additional account. Both are set to sync. Incidentally, under "Accounts and sync," both have the green "synch" symbol next to them. If you click on the default email account, you have the options of what to sync (I just sync gmail). Under the second account, I sync contacts and gmail, but there is a white sync symbol next to the gmail sync. What is this white sync symbol indicating?

Secondly, the Gmail app is not updating. Sometimes it takes a few minutes for an email to push; sometimes it can take hours -- even a day with one email. I thought of possible things that might interfere: the stock email application (which is set to sync every 15 minutes and includes the same gmail account) and an application I have installed called Touchdown which I use for my Groupwise at work. This thing works fine, but I wonder if the push option is interfering with Gmail.

Lastly, frequently when I launch the Gmail app from my LauncherPro plus dock, the program kicks me out back to the home page. There is no "force close" button.

I got that white symbol a few times too, right after I pressed the sync button, so as far as I can tell it seems to be stuck trying to sync. I exited the sync to see if new entries were added, and they weren't as long as I had the white symbol. I rebooted the phone and synced again and it worked. My Epic 4g is totally stock. I don't believe it is the phone, but an error on google's end.

The white sync symbol at least on Froyo shows that a sync is "in progress". Green sync symbol means its turned on/activated.

Gmail could be having issues with your secondary program. If at all possible I would stick to one email app. K9 is a good "go to" app when others fail. It works really well with retrieving from POP email accounts where others fail.

Lastly, not too sure what issue your having with Launcher Pro and Gmail with the closings. Launchers and apps can sometime conflict for strange reasons.

Keep in mind that seeing those symbol doesn't necessarily mean that the process didn't work.

Most time you will get an error syncing your gmail account.. my belief is that..that error is just a glitch in the system. Nothing to really worry about.

If you're having serious problems with your mail app uninstall and reinstall it. This usually fixes most issues.

I believe the phone stock email apps work pretty darn good.

I have two accounts syncing with gmail app with no problem... and a second app syncing with stock email via exchange for my work email... they are all push and all three work flawlessly... that said, I don't use a few of the other programs you mentioned... I'd try removing one at a time to see if you can figure out the root issue... I pretty much always have green sync circles when I go in to check...

Why do you have two email apps trying to work with the same account?

Because my Gmail is not synchronizing and I need reliable email delivery. To be honest, I added Gmail to the stock email client after I noticed Gmail having problems.

I can remove the account from the stock email app, but I suspect it won't make a difference.

Are you referring to Touchdown as the "secondary program?" If so, I don't think there is anything I can do about that. That program is, as they say, mission critical since it is needed for work.

I will try K9 as a program and see how that goes.

Nothing else...just Gmail.

@kevincwelch, I understand the email situation. If you need it for work thats fine. I would check out K9, it might be configurable to work with your needs and could replace you having to use multiple apps. Many people have had good success with K9.

The Launcher Pro and Gmail. I would try going to settings>manage apps>Launcher Pro and clear your cache/data and try again. If that doesn't work you may have to uninstall and reinstall LP and see if that resolves anything.

Thanks for the recommendations. I installed K9 and so far I like it.

A related question: with Touchdown and K9 getting push email, how much of a drain is this on the battery? I get email pretty frequently.
