gmail wont download

All of a sudden my gmail won't download to my messages folder. It will download if I use the gmail app but I don't like using that one. I always used the regular mail app and had my gmail ,hotmail and 2 yahoo accounts in the mail app as well. I erased and re added the gmail several times and all I get is a notification that I have 3 unread emails and when I check its blank. I also rebooted the phone and no difference. What is funny is that I added my gmail to where it says Microsoft exchange and it worked. Anyone else have this problem ?
