Going into Email places checkboxes by default

When I tap on Email icon I get into Inbox and all emails are prefaced with checkboxes like I want to select some of them. Why is that?

So you can mark them as read or delete them

Is that what it is? Not sure it's right though because somehow I was able to open my inbox and all emails where shown as a flat list, just like it should be.

Hit the boxes and now you can delete them all instead of one at a time, located at the top right.

I understand their purpose, but dont understand why a phone is thinking for me suggesting that I am going to delete anything.
