Note that Google is offering basically the same price point as Samsung without expandable storage and without the IP 68 rating. I don't see why they couldn't have sold the smaller Pixel at $549.

Google decided they were going to make a flagship phone instead of poorly built midrange phones. I see no problem here.

The problem that people have is these aren't flagship phones. They are missing features that could've been added and don't fit in the price ranges that they are offered in. Why would you spend $859 for a Pixel XL when you can just get a Note 7 with water resistance, micro SD Card slot, S-pen, probably a better display, with more features for the same price? Google made an iPhone. It's only flagship in price... They could've at least added stereo speakers and water resistance instead of having those ugly bezels. And people make fun of iPhones bezels...

I have a 6p that is great and I paid $499 new. It's specs mirror the Pixel except for the SOC processor. The 6p is more than fast and suits me fine and supports most if not all USA LTE installed networks.

Because I don't want a Samsung phone. I want Google's software and optimization. That's why I bought the silver XL 128 GB version. I've read the speakers are very good and all the hands on reviewers I've seen have been impressed with the speed and fluidity of the OS and the speed of the camera. Google was able to better optimize the hardware and the software because they had full control of both sides. This is the only flagship I'd be willing to pay that much money for. Of course this is my opinion.

I decided to get the Pixel, but hesitated due to the price. Ultimately I wanted a sub 5.5" phone and opted for the Pixel due to specs (mainly proc & camera). I considered the 5X, but it was more of a value choice and the camera would be a downgrade from what I have had recently. The OP3 was never really considered since I believe its still not supporting CDMA at all, and I never looked at the ZTE device.

Cancelling my Pixel XL and going with a year old phone, a unlocked new Nexus 6P 128gb for under $530...plan on testing the pixel and returning it within the allotted time frame and paying the $35 restocking fee. For me... this just makes so much sense rather then buying an unproven $1000 phone no matter the manufacturer, best of luck to those who have bought it should be a great phone!

I'm not the one trying to claim that Pixel is somehow an established brand with recognition. Richard Servello is...

The problem with saying that Google is going to market this and build a lasting brand is that there is so much overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

The latest absurdity? I launched the Google Cast app on my phone today and it said it is being rebranded as Google Home. Never mind that Google Home is already the name of their home automation system that the new announced competitor to Android Echo the Google Assistant connects to.

Google does not build brands. They are mad scientists constantly creating new stuff that does 60% of what the old stuff already does. Not only did Google let Android completely get out of their control, but Samsung went off and bought a payments company (now Samsung Pay) which beats Google Wallet / Android Pay in every measurable way. The Pixel phone doesn't solve any of those problems and will have a market penetration roughly at BlackBerry Priv levels.
