Google Assistant screwed up my voice-to-text

I was recently prompted to update to google assistant in order to use the "OK Google" function. After I did, I had no problems using OK Google, but my voice-to-text functionality became compromised. Whenever I'd use the microphine button on the keyboard, it would translate my voice to text for about 2 seconds, then quit. This happened on every application I tried it with. The only solution I found was to turn off Google Assistant - which means I can no longer use OK Google, but at least my text-to-speech works again. Is there a fix so I can have both like before the "upgrade"? I'm using a Galaxy Note 4.
