All,

Just picked up my new panda Pixel 2 XL. Love the phone so far. Just trying to figure out how to use the google assistant when the phone was locked. It seems if I activate the phone either with "Hey Google" or using the Active Edge, I would ask what is the weather? It would ask me to unlock the phone first.
Is there a way to bypass this without me needing to unlock the phone?

it asked if you wanted to have assistant when you setup the phone. I'm not sure if you skipped this where to go but I'd check settings for assistant and see if that toggle is available.

GA won't give out any information while the phone is locked cause, well, it's locked. You can use trusted voice in the security settings to have it unlock and respond to your request. But otherwise it won't complete your request while it's locked.

It actually gives you this option to bypass when you setup the phone. I just don't know where to find it after you setup initially.

I don't know anything about that, but there are a lot of threads in this forum that say it can't be done. If you remember the way to get it to work from a locked screen, I'm sure many would like to know, so please share whatever you find.

To see the option (toggle) I'd have to reset my phone and set it up again. I don't feel like doing that. I've seen it three times in two days since my phone was jacked and wifi stopped and I had to do full resets twice and then Verizon swapped it today. So I'm not planning on doing it again. Activating assistant will unlock the device is the option so it's limiting security. So it's not exactly the same.

You don't have to reset

like ImTurningViolet posted, you can turn on trusted voice to have the "ok Google" hot word unlock the phone and give answers.

I will say, that the experience work my phone has been that I've had to use "OK Google," if I say "Hey Google," it doesn't unlock.

Only thing I could suggest is try retraining it.
it should work for both.
I do find it finicky at times and find myself retraining it

I got a pop up quite awhile back that gave me the option for changing to hey google which I did and it now answers to both. Also I have trusted voice enabled as well as trusted place and my phone unlocks when I summon the assistant, never fails me.
