I'm not clear if my VPN will block these or not. Either way, I simply disabled the feed on the launcher and am pretty much going to avoid it.

I already get ads in mine. Might be due to using the beta version of the Google app. I think it's at most one ad at a time, and it's pretty clearly stated that it's an ad, but still annoying.:-\

Is there any way to change this function to maybe show briefing from Flipboard or something?

Glad I don't have that set up on my phone, at least, for nothing more than the mediocre voice dial. Hopefully they don't start inserting ads into that. O.O
