Google confirms Verizon will handle updates

Every Verizon Google Pixel customer 4 months from now...

Does anyone remember the Motorola Nexus 6 OTA fiasco? Nexus 6 was sold by the major national carriers. All the carriers got the same setup for the N6 that Verizon has for the Pixel. If a carrier sold the N6 they got to approve OTAs. What's even more annoying is that it did not matter where you bought the N6. The carrier sim you dropped in your N6 got to control your OTA approvals. This setup was created because they all sold the same model. The N6 from Verizon was no different from the N6 sold by Google. I bought mine unlocked from Google and at&t(my carrier) still gets to approve OTAs. This went away with the Huawei 6p but looks like it was brought back on the Pixel.

Verizon Pixels locked down and updated by them

At one time, the Google Nexus phones were the ideal models to get in the U.S.A. as they came with unlocked bootloaders, no bloatware and updates direct from Google. Well, all that has changed if you get your Pixel model from Verizon or Best Buy....

"This means that Google will still push security updates to all Pixel (XL) phones including those on Verizon, while significant software updates which change the version number, will be released by Verizon on Pixel phones bought through the carrier or at Best Buy (as Best Buy only sells the Verizon-locked version). As a reminder, the Verizon Pixel phones will not come with an unlockable bootloader."

"if you want to avoid Verizon holding updates hostage, you can totally pre-order the unlocked version from the Google Store, as it works with all major carriers in the US, including Verizon. The Google Store even offers 24-month no-interest financing options."

See the GSMArena article... Verizon to manage Android updates to Pixel phones it sells

You have been warned!!!

Are you saying that once you put a Verizon SIM in the Pixel bought directly from Google it will be like having bought the phone from Verizon. All the software updates will have to be approved by Verizon?

Most of the Pixels will be bought through Verizon. Even Google's commercials say exclusively through Verizon. I cannot imagine that the phones sold through Verizon will have any meaningful delays in software updates. This is Google's flagship phone and I am confident that they will work closely with Verizon to provide speedy updates. The galaxy nexus debacle was a long time ago and not relevant. Just my thought (or hope).

As per post #64, above, only Pixel phones purchased through Verizon and Best Buy will come with their own, Verizon, firmware and locked bootloader, (preventing rooting), and platform updates will come from Verizon and not Google. As the article that is linked to in the post also states... "Sidenote: Although ads show the phones are "exclusive to Verizon", which is the only US carrier who will sell the phones, the Google Store will sell Pixel phones unlocked for all US carriers. The ads are misleading in this regard."

As for speedy updates from Verizon... it will take them time to, "adapt", the stock Google firmware to accommodate their bloatware and system changes, as we have already seen in numerous other manufacturers phones.

Asked and answered.

So,,does that mean yes?
Your question was already answered by ironass. A phone bought from Best Buy or Verizon will be under Verizon's control. A phone bought from Google will not have a locked bootloader.

I believe the question being asked is regarding updates to a phone bought from Google and a Verizon sim installed, NOT whether or not the bootloader will be locked....The question is will Verizon control the OS updstes if you buy unlocked but then use it on verizon?

Yes exactly...that is the question

Yes, that is the question. And I don't think we can know for sure until someone tries taking an existing active Verizon SIM and puts it into a Google Store Pixel. Having said that, I am using an MXPE on Verizon and my updates have come from Lenovo, not Verizon - however, during testing, my understanding is they asked which carrier you were on. It will be interesting to see if Lenovo rolls out Nougat before I decide when to buy a Pixel

A Google purchased Pixel with a Verizon SIM will have all updates coming directly from Google.

Ugh, this is what I didn't want to hear... I keep Verizon because I get a discount through my job as well as their, admittedly, good service but I have a Motorola Droid Turbo that I am still waiting to get updated to Marshmallow ... When you go on VZW's forums and ask the questions, their only response is "Is there a problem with your phone that requires an update, can we help you in a different way?"... Yes, the problem is my phone is running outdated software!!!

The only reason that I was hoping it would be different is that I have such an old, grandfathered plan that I still get discounts to upgrade my phones every 2 years (hell, I still even have unlimited data on my main line)... Now, I'm not sure if I will even bother with this phone at all, is it a gamebreaker enough to warrant having to deal with the inevitable VZW update delays?

God, it's the Galaxy Nexus all over again. Is Google ever going to learn not to trust Verizon (or any carrier, for that matter)?

Buy your Pixels straight from Google. Just say no to Verizon hostage-taking.

Re: Bloatware and updates on Verizons pixels?

If there is no additional bloat from VZW, do we know if they will have to "approve" each update? There should be no need now. As long as the phone makes a good faith attempt to download updates on WiFi, let's hope VZW will not hold back updates.

There will be a few pre installed apps from verizon on the pixels they sell but you will have the option to uninstall, also google will be releasing updates to all pixels but verizon will be handling the updates on the pixels they sell and google will be handling the updates directly on pixels sold through the Google store
