Google Contact Sync Problem

I have not been able to sync my contacts with Google for a few days now. I can see the sync begin under settings/accounts/gmail, but then it hangs after just a few minutes. I have done battery pulls, deleted several videos that I thought were taking too much memory, and about everything else I can think of. Any other suggestions? Calendar and email work fine.

How are you syncing your contacts?

People - menu - import/export this is how I sync mine to my Google account.

Are you trying to pull your contacts from Google into your phone?

If so then you can try to sync manually:

1. Settings > Accounts
2. Select your Google Account
3. My phone shows "Synch Contacts," as well as gmail and calendar
4. Press Synch Contacts. Contact should synch and show current time stamp.

This can take quite a bit of time if you have a lot of google contacts.

Or if that doesnt work....

Unsync your google contacts, then clear data and cache in the contacts storage under manage apps. Resync.

And if that doesn't work....
**This is extreme and should only be done as last resort.**

1. Backup google contacts to a VCARD file and place on memory card

2. Delete contacts off of Google account

3. Hard reset (making sure to NOT have phone do any backups--uncheck second box and THEN 1st box on the factory reset screen

4. Import contacts into telephone - sync to Google

5. Search contacts for the word "null"

6. Fill in fields with information that have "null" in them

7. Sync phone

Uh-Oh...

I did your second suggestion, tho I didn't know it was going to wipe my contacts list completely clean! Now I really need it to work. I only have 500 +/- names in Google, but I need them on my phone pronto. And yes, Google to phone is what I need.

Now try to go into your sync settings and resync them. 500 Contacts will take a while so if you dont get immediate results dont worry.

Nope. No sync. I can't even add a name to the contacts list, it says I have no active accounts.

Sounds like it isnt seeing you have a google account added. Something funky going on. Could be an app you have added that is interfering. You might need to do a factory reset. (option 3)

I have now been able to add contacts (I deleted my Yahoo Account, not sure if that did it). The contacts I added show both Google and Phone Profiles, hmmm.

Also, I notice the sync indicator (the one that spins) does not spin, but does two blinks at exactly 10 seconds apart. I think it may be trying to sync, but something is holding it back. And, I went back into Google and changed it back to FirstName/LastName instead of the other way around, maybe that will help.

I'm not ready for option 3 yet, it's a bit intimidating. There has to be something else I can try, such as delete all added apps. I may go one at a time.

One at a time is a great idea. Narrow it down. Might take some time but it would help a lot.

I now have the sync trying to start up, the dial goes around for a few seconds before it stops. A message appears briefly (1/2 second) which says "Sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shortly." I have to start and stop several times to be able to read it. Also, it has now updarted the last sync date, to just a few minutes ago. However nothing new has been transferred from Google Contacts.

If I do the factory reset, will all data on the phone and card be erased? What is the estimated time to complete this reset? If I have no true Google contacts left on my phone, do I need to backup to vCard? Delete contacts, you mean on the phone correct? Complete instructions on how to do this would be appreciated. Thanks for the help, gotta get this fixed.

Last night I did the following, and it appears most (is there anyway to count the contacts in your phone?) contacts have reappeared on my phone. This is what I did tho:

-Deleted all groups in Google, other than what they insist you keep
-Deleted any non-business needed app off my phone
-Deleted all accounts other than my Google on the phone (didn't need them anyway)
-Rebooted and battery pulled several times

As I mentioned, it appears the contacts have reappeared, altho my sync still seems to be stuck on 1/21 at 10:09am.

Hi sorry it took me a while to respond.

The reset will remove data from phone but your card will be left intact. No worries there. Should take maybe 10 minutes at most to get back online. You should not have to back up contacts since they are stored on Google, unless you have some that are on phone but not google. To do a factory reset all you have to do it go into Location And Security. At the bottom of that menu there should be an option for factory reset.
Edit: I just saw you next comment. Good to see you got your contacts back. However if the Sync issue is still there I would certainly consider the factory reset.

Does the factory reset remove the apps I have downloaded and puts me back to square one? I assume I would have to reload the Google account, that should be simple enough. I want to know as much as possible in the event I feel the reset is the best option. It's still not syncing correctly, but at least I can continue working.

I didn't read through all these posts, but if it weren't mentioned before, GO TO YOUR MY VERIZON ACCOUNT and delete ALL the contacts listed there. It won't affect your Google/Gmail contacts list, but it WILL clean up all the multi-links to old and duplicated contact data.

I did a Factory Data Reset a while back to get rid of that terrible My Verizon involvement in contacts. I've never activated it on my X ... and yet the other day, I was having problems with contacts (again), checked My Verizon and Lo! There was their messy version of my Google list. So, deleted them all and everything much better.

All of your apps will be gone and you will have to re download them. Although there may be a backup app out there that will help you.

You Market will remember the purchased apps.

I had problems with the Verizon account on my old Blackberry, thanks for this tip. I'll give it a try as I am still having problems with the sync. And I haven't done the factory reset yet, last resort coming soon...

Where in My Verizon did you find the contacts list? I'm not using My Backup, and can't find any other place they could be located.

Did a factory reset, and only a few of the contacts sync'd. These contacts appear to be ones I added to gmail on my own, not ones that were imported through a 3rd party program. Any Google contact pro's out there?

I have this similar problem but trying to get my contacts from my phone to my google acct without wiping them all
