I know Google Drive auto sync on desktop downloads all files onto your pc. What does it do from your Google sync on android? It doesn't seem to download any of the files.

No, it only shows you what you have in the cloud. If you select a file, it will open in the respective app (i.e., Google Docs, Google Sheets, etc.), but the file is cached, not officially downloaded to the device. In Google Drive, you can select any file and choose to download it, so that there's a copy on the device that you can then manipulate.

Sync will keep the Drive contents updated--it just won't download anything until you ask it to. If you turn off the Drive sync on the phone, then any file additions or deletions you make elsewhere on Drive (e.g., on your computer) won't be reflected in the Google Drive app on your phone.

Ahh OK thanks. I've been using a 3rd party app to access drive (Quickpic). The Google Drive sync must only apply to the default drive app.
