Google+ in foreground draining battery

Was uploading a video and put the phone down. The screen was off but Google+ was open. Kept the phone awake the whole time and killed the battery. Is there some auto refresh that keeps the phone awake.

Check your settings for Instant Upload in Google+.

I clicked it to manually upload a video and for the next 2 days my phone was hot and the battery was dying really fast.

I realised what was going on, cancelled the upload and changed the setting to make it upload only when plugged into the charger.

Instant upload is set to wifi and while charging. So it wasn't that.

Since most of my friends don't use Google+ yet for some unknown reason I disabled the app on my phone and I have noticed a slight bump in battery life. Nothing to be bragging about but I have noticed that Android OS does consume less battery life. This was even after changing sync settings.
