Android Central Question

I have a Pixel 2 XL. I think the most recent update to my phone was within the past week. Yesterday, I started getting pop ups saying Google has stopped. It gives me the option of submitting feedback and sometimes closing the app. When I close the app, the pop-up just comes back. The most recent version of Google on my phone is 8.9.9.21.arm64. I tried clearing the Google app cache and restarting the phone. Makes no difference. My phone is not rooted, and I don't know a thing about theme apps that some people have found have caused problems in the past. I don't have a lot of separately downloaded programs, maybe five. How can I find out what is causing this?

Welcome to Android Central! Did you also clear the app data for the Google app?

Response to B. Diddy re: Pixel 2 XL Google stopping -

B. Diddy, yes, I did clear the app data for the Google app (if we're talking about the cache). If there is other data that should be cleared, where would I go for that? While I was at it, I cleared all the other app caches, too.

In the Settings>Apps menu, when you select an app and then tap Storage, you should see an option to Clear Cache and another to Clear Data. Cache is different from Data, so also select the Clear Data option.

B Diddy, I went into the Google app and deleted the data as you instructed. Still getting Google has stopped; in fact, it just popped up as I finished half of that sentence. I did not reboot after the data was deleted, however. Other thoughts? I sure appreciate your help.

See if the problem persists in Safe Mode: https://support.google.com/pixelphone/answer/2852139?hl=en. If not, then something you installed is probably causing the instability. It's worth doing this even if you only have a few of your own apps installed.

Also, make sure the Google app is fully up to date. Open the Play Store, search for the Google app, and see if there's an Update button.

BDiddy, I had another Google update this morning, so I'm going to see if that fixes things; if not, I'll try the safe mode process. Dieselhazza, I don't even know what theming apps are (I might if I were 30 years younger ;-)), so I don't think so. Thanks for the question, though. I saw that in some other threads and in online searches, so I guess it's a thing a lot of people do. I just have the basic Google phone with maybe 9 or 10 simple apps. The problem seemed to occur mostly with Messages or Facebook Messenger, but I'm going to see if the update I received this morning tames things. Thank you, both!

I was having the same problem with Google app closing every time I used the microphone using Gboard keyboard. Clearing the data fixed it. I thought it was a Google messages problem at first. Point is, try and see if maybe some other app is causing it to close and clear it's data

Well! The last update stopped the stoppages! I guess all the crusty feedback I gave them (and probably a lot of other people gave them, too) moved things along. Hopefully I won't jinx myself! Thanks for everyone's input!!
