Google low end phones!

Maybe Google will do something like Apple and use last year's models as their budget devices.

Will there be any low cost devices from google???

As other posters have mentioned above, you can grab last year's flagships for awesome deals. That's normally what I do when it comes to phones and upgrading. The Nexus 6P is at a very good price point right now. I'm with Rogers and it's currently $0 on contract. Plus, once the Pixel devices come out, all Nexus products will drop further in price.

I agree. The Nexus 6P's are tempting, but one of my concerns is with Google's recent policies concerning update support. It used to be they'd support it until the hardware couldn't handle the update anymore. Now, there's an artificial time clock.

Yeah but they still seem to support devices past that time. Technically the Nexus 6 would be considered end of support as of this month but it's still getting the 7.1 beta in December. So that timeline they give is they'll support the devices until at least that time.

Yes, I've read about this too. It also concerns me when it comes to considering the 6P... Which is unfortunate, because the 6P is so awesome.

Since the N6 was released 10/2014 and Google says they'll support (meaning security updates) for three years after release or 18 months after the last sale date in their Store (whichever comes last), the N6 should have at least one year of security updates left.

It's the N5 (10/2013) that may be out of luck soon. :(

I'm talking about security updates not OS upgrades.

At the moment, it doesn't seem like Google are making any 'low end' devices. I presume you are wanting something like the Nexus 5x? i love that device. But maybe if we cross our fingers, over time prices will drop and hopefully Google can bring us something a little more affordable. :)

At this time there is no news. Maybe they would revive the Android One handsets or something like that. But I wouldn't get my hopes high.

Android One seems to still be going strong. The most recent ones use the snapdragon 617 and came out this year. Afaik they're running 7.0 on most of them.

It would be cool if vendors could put out a Nexus phone if it met hardware criteria, ran stock and received updates. Then I think there could be low end or mid range phones. I was hoping for a mid range phone this year.

That's exactly what Android One is.

It would be nice to see a North American version of Android One (selling direct to consumers via the Google store) and I bet Google wouldn't mind doing it but the US carriers will do what they can to stop it. Unlocked phones are Kryptonite to the carriers' business model. :D

But this isn't changing with the Pixels so why would it with a low end/cost Google phone. At least with last year's flagships, you still have the option to flash current software past their support date. And two years for software and three for security is still the best you'll get on android. The dev community will have to pick up the rest.
