Google Maps App Resolution

Hello Everyone,

I did some searches and couldn't find anything, so hoping this isn't a dupe. I've had my Xoom for a few days and so far love it. One of the things so far that sort of irks me about it is the resolution of the native Google Maps app. It looks pretty "rough", and a much lower quality than my original Droid. A lot of the lines look very rough and jagged, and even some of the secondary highway signs look poorly rendered (like they're resized wrong for the display). Sort of reminds me of my first Windows mobile device in 2002, LOL, with no anti-aliasing and a low-res display.

At first I choked this up to "Well the LCD resolution isn't as sharp as everyone was hoping for..." But what's interesting is just this morning it dawned on me to launch maps.google.com thru the Browser, and the maps look great so it's not the LCD. Is this a known issue/anyone else seeing this with the Google Maps App?

Thanks!

-Mike

Huh? Did you download some other mapping utility?

I'd say something is wrong with your unit, but you seem to be displaying the proper resolution when viewing a website. The maps image is sharp on mine. Street lettering too.

When you zoom in, buildings should appear. Pulling two fingers down, you should be able to get an isometric view. Turning both fingers will rotate the image. It should all happen smoothly and be crystal clear.

Thanks for the reply... definitely no 3rd party Mapping tools installed. I started it up, it synced to my existing Gmail account for apps from my Droid (maybe there's a variable?) and the rest is stock. I'll see if I can find a screen-grab app to show what I am talking about. According to the about screen it's:

Version: 5.3.0 (#5305) gmm-android-verizon
Platform: android:Motorola-stringray-Xoom
Server:https://mobilemaps.clients.google.com/glm/mmap
DPI: 160; Icons: 160; Tiles: 1

Mine too.

After examining the map thoroughly, the only thing I can find that could use improvement is the oval that goes around route numbers. It's not perfectly smooth. But that doesn't change with the zoom level... it stays the same size no matter the zoom.

What happens when you look at a city and zoom in to see buildings? You should get really sharp edges on the buildings.

Thanks for all the replies. I think I am just being too picky. I suspect there there isn't any antialiasing of some of the items (such as the GPS range circle and route numbers that soften the lines so the look a bit better.) I did clear the cache, etc. Not a big deal.

Thanks again,

-Mike
