good news- I uninstalled updates on maps and all the problems with choosing defaults and Lattitude went away. So Atleast I know it's maps and not the latest thunderbolt OTA.
Bad news- I had no choice but to reinstall updates because the version of maps that came with my Thunderbolt only shows me Pangaea.
Good news- reinstalling the updates seem to make it better although I'm not certain of its completely bug free.
What happens if you open a map link (e.g. off a Google search)? Does it open in maps or in the browser?

This is because of the Apple patent lawsuits. This feature and any similar features (opening up calendar links, YouTube links, etc.) were removed because they "infringed" on an Apple patent. This protected them and all other HTC products from being banned from sale. So no, there is no fix to this.
So you're telling me if I want that feature back I have to root/rom or get another phone... that makes me want to scream. Thank you I really appreciate your response.
Re: this only being an HTC issue:
I'm afraid this is not true; I have a Moto Droid 2 and am having the same problem. I used to be able to work out a route in Google Maps on my PC - one of my own design; not the standard - send that to my phone, then click the link and navigate. Now only the destination address is clickable, and the result comes up in the browser - not Maps.
Very disappointed.
Lame times a million. I hate apple. There's no way around this? C'mon smart people.
