Google maps won't speak unless on Wifi

All of a sudden Google maps will not speak directions unless I am on Wi-Fi. It won't even play a test sound. What in the world has caused this to change?! I have tried all the standard fixes for making Google maps speak. The specific issue here is it doesn't work unless I'm on Wi-Fi. Anyone have this problem? Anybody have a solution? Thank you in advance!

Just to be clear, one of the "standard fixes" you tried was to clear the app's cache and data and reboot?

That is correct. I have completed all of the fixes recommended by Google which, in the past, have worked on those rare occasions when Google maps would not speak. This is a unique problem. Google maps only speaks on Wi-Fi, not in the car, while traveling. Very frustrating. When I Google this problem with Google search, I see the same complaint come up from Apple users but nothing from Android users.

If it were me and I had tried all of the recommended fixes to get back voice navigation on Google Maps without success, my next step would be to try another app, such as Waze (owned by Google), to see if the issue also shows up on a different app. If it does, that would eliminate the Google Map app as the culprit. If it doesn't, further troubleshooting of Google Maps would obviously be required.

Have you checked if settings in google maps is WiFi only?
