Google+ messenger notifications

So I'm getting google+ messenger notifications fine on my Nexus 4, sound and lights (using lightflow to control colour). My buddy also picked up a Nexus 4, and for some reason his notifications aren't showing up for google+ messenger. He only knows there's a message from me if he goes into the app. His notifications work fine for Google Talk however. I've gotten him to go through all the settings in Google+ and made sure he has everything checked ON for notifications. I haven't seen his phone as he lives a far distance from me so I can't check it myself. Any ideas why he's not getting Google+ notifications for messenger? He is on stock 4.2 firmware.

Figured it out. He had the conversation on "mute" in Google+ messenger so it doesn't show any notifications.
