How did you pull that off with the etf? They don't make you show proof or hand over your current vzw device?
They absolutely do make you hand over your current VZW device, but what is current--The phone you are actively using when you port to TMO, or the device that got you stuck with VZW for a $350 ETF Fee?
I knew I was getting the Nexus 6 64 GB and I wanted it immediately. TMO was my way to do it.
1. I opened a new line with VZW and got a Droid Turbo for around $150. It was $250, but they had a promo where you could trade in any smartphone and get a $100 VZW Gift Card. I gave them an old blackberry that was in great working condition.
2. Prior to porting over to TMO, I activated another blackberry on the line and made a few calls, so it was my current device at the time I was porting.
3. I ported the number over to TMO, got the Nexus 6 shipped in record time, and closed the new VZW line.
4. Kept my current VZW service suspended without billing.
5. I knew I was getting the Nexus 6 to use on VZW, so I sold the new Droid Turbo and used the money for beer, food, Christmas presents, and to pay the ETF on my closed VZW Account.
6. As part of the ETF Buyout, I was required to send TMO my VZW Blackberry. They gave me a $1.00 in trade-in credit and applied it to my bill.
7. When I received my final VZW bill, I sent it to TMO electronically and it clearly showed my early termination fee of $350.
8. Because I met all the terms of the promo: ported number , traded in current device, and submitted final bill with ETF clearly noted, they approved it very quickly.
9. Got the $350 Visa card and paid off the remainder of the device.
Yes, I basically was using TMO service exclusively for 2 months, because I wanted to avoid paying TMO and VZW simultaneously for service. TMO was OK, but not of the same caliber as Verizon.
However, they shipped me the device immediately after it was released and gave me $350 after I had fulfilled the terms of their promotion. I really can't speak poorly of them.
Honestly, the $350 Visa Card was pure gravy. If the next Nexus device supports all 4 major carriers and TMO gets it tight away, I'll be happy to make my way back to them and their network may be even better next year.
