Re: What's with all the mixed reviews

Well... it's more than diffences of opinion. I'm not sure if people's predisposition on the size is tainting their reviews, or if there really are physical problems with some phones. Reports that it's slower than the N5 vs other reports that it's the fastest thing out there. Battery life that's amazing to battery life that's average/mediocre. Best Android phone ever to worthless big phone.

Re: What's with all the mixed reviews

Battery life that's amazing to battery life that's average/mediocre.

It's funny how subjective this can be.. I saw one review that said they ran a test and got 8 hours of continued video play back and called it mediocre and lagging other similar devices and noted the Note 4 got a full hour longer and the another review that had the same 8 hours of continued video play back and called it excellent battery life and on par with other devices in it's segment..... Same two reviews... Both had it lasting well over 24 hours on regular on and off usage.. but one calling that bad for a Phablet and the other saying it was fantastic for a device of this size....

Reality is it depends on your usage and what you need out of it... If it can last 24+ hours with an average of 4 hours of screen on time per day and still have 20 or 30% remaining I'd be super happy.... Doesn't matter if my phone is at 1% or 80% battery.. when I go to bed the phone goes on the charger for the night so it's at 100% when I get up for the next day...

Re: What's with all the mixed reviews

Basically you should ignore the "This is a great or this is a bad phone" part..... Read in between the lines and what they specifically say about certain things and build your opinion based on the information and not the opinion part.. As stated earlier 8 hours of continual video streaming is good to someone and is bad to someone else... 6 inch is too big for some and perfect for others.. I've seen women with tiny hands who love their Note 3's and much bigger guys with much bigger hands say that same Note 3 is just too much phone...

I'm going to try to get through this without coming across as the "troll" I've been branded so far. There's mixed reviews about this device because there are some legitimate issues with it. For the majority of people, it's of no consequence and they're going to buy it and enjoy it regardless. There's just a few pain points previous Nexus holders are going to have with this phone and that can ellicit a "Meh" attitude towards it.

The camera software hasn't really improved (yet). The slow focus and slow HDR+ processing makes it difficult to get a shot quickly and that's infuriating if you're used to another device(s) that doesn't have that issue. Now with that said, the hardware has improved and stills look pretty good. Hopefully the software catches up, but it didn't on the Nexus 5 and that's a reason for concern.

The battery life issue Nexus devices have had seem to be present in the Nexus 6. Is this fixable? Of course. They more than likely will be able to do so, but even if they don't, that size battery and the turbo charger should be enough for most everyone. It's a little concerning that they haven't figured it out so far, but some of it probably has something to do with how inefficient the display is.

That brings up the display. They weren't going to be able to get the type of panel found on the Note 4 and that's unfortunate. I'm sure it's still gorgeous, but it looks to be poorly calibrated and not as efficient as newer panels. In a 6 inch phone (and for that price), the quality of display is pretty important.

And then there's the encryption issue. I'm honestly not sure what to make of it yet. I've seen the comparisons, but I just can't imagine the device seems that slow in the hand. It's a legitimate gripe, but hopefully something they can fix software-wise.

What that means for reviews is just that "more of the same" mentality that they went through last year with the Nexus 5. This year, the higher price tag was supposed to come with fewer compromises and I think there's a lot of people, myself included, that don't feel this device lives up to that price. Does it suck? No. Lollipop alone is enough for it to be a good device. I don't think anyone here dislikes the Nexus line. Speaking for myself, I'm just disappointed. Your mileage may vary.

Re: What's with all the mixed reviews

While a debatable amount of the speed is attributable to encryption and possibly fixable, the real speed difference you see in the current release of the software is going to be based on what you are doing with it. Maybe they fix the read/write speeds, maybe they don't. Safest bet is to assume they don't, and then make your decision based on what the slowness means to you.

A lot of the slowness was reported in terms of either artificial benchmarks or load times on levels of very large 3D games. The thing has 3GB of RAM, and there are no reports I've seen of slowness of that. So once an app is loaded up, it's gonna just go whoosh on a processor like the N6 has, and as long as you don't try to second-guess Android and start flushing processes out of that fast RAM, day-to-day non-gaming use on it is probably going to be nice and snappy.

Benchmark scores do indicate an effect in real-world use, but that effect is heavily influenced by whether you will be doing a lot of what is being benchmarked all at once. If G+ or Hangouts or normal 10-20MB apps take an extra half-second to load at first app startup but then pop into view instantly if they are cached in RAM, I'm going to see a few slight laggy delays the first time I load my medium-sized apps each day, or possibly if/when they ever leave cache. Personally, I can live with that. Others' mileage may vary.

As to the rest, well, it depends on how much you care about the wait between levels in a game as the current level is flushed out of RAM and the next level is loaded up. The reviews I read were talking about 30 second load times instead of 5-10 seconds. Given how long a game level lasts, that doesn't sound like a deal-breaker to me. On the other hand, I don't play big 3D games on my phone in general, so for those who do it might be really bad.

I think this is pretty accurate, though for many the camera, battery, and display are great, but not amazing. (Not sure what to make of the encryption thing either; many have stated superb performance).

Ultimately I think the Nexus 6 suffered from overhype and extremely high expectations, combined with a huge phone, especially when considering the higher price. Had it been sized a bit smaller, and priced a bit lower, but everything else hardware-wise was the same, I think most people would be extremely happy.

Re: What's with all the mixed reviews

Either way I'm getting the nexus on release. It will be my 2nd of many more tries at android or my last. Had a poor experience with my s3. Swore I would never go back. But one last try

Yeah I don't see it being a deal breaker for most people. The size? That might be. Different strokes for different folks. Regardless, Lollipop should be a good addition to these other devices, especially the Moto X. Samsung may benefit the most from it if they decide to tone down Touchwiz now that Lollipop has a lot of bright colors that will look good on a Super AMOLED screen.

No wonder... you had Touchwiz... You need to experience Android in it's native state. But bloated up and sometimes laggy. This way you can take the device and create whatever kind of experience you want out of it!!!!

Now don't let that confuse you. Touchwiz on an S3? Yeah not the smoothest experience. On the Note 4? Much, much different. They're learning.

Gotta go with Andranalyne a bit here - Touchwiz on the S3 was just .. well... eww. On the S4, it was actually quite good (if a bit confusing and foreign to those of us who prefer purer Android experiences). On the S5, it's almost good enough to make me think about it.

My wife is a big Galaxy S(whatever the current number is) fan. But she thankfully went from an S2 straight to an S4. My father in law went for the S3 and didn't have a great experience with it. Her S5 is a lovely thing to hold and behold, and many of the Touchwiz features are nice now.

I have friends who have Notes (2s and 3s) and Touchwiz seems well-executed on there.

It's even better on the Note 4. I'm running the new Google Now Launcher (which has the Lollipop look) and it's not slow by any means. Best part? All the S Pen functions work on this launcher as well.

I understand. Touchwiz can be a pretty polarizing thing with android fans. You either love it or hate it...lol I had the Note 3 and thought the device was great. But just did not enjoy Touchwiz. I preferred the google experience of android. I found it to be very heavy on the device and it took us a lot of space. But they are constantly working on it so I am sure it is better on the Note 4. The only thing that really matters is getting a phone that YOU enjoy. Does not matter what anybody else thinks in the end. It is your money and your experience.

It's kind of surprising that different people could have different thoughts. They need to reconnect to the hive mind.

So, you mean resistance isn't futile?

he always does a pretty darn good review....

His reviews are awesome, I was just about to post it until I saw someone had already. He nails it when he mentions who the phone is for.

If you like stock android and are into Google's software then this is the phone for you, which is me all the way. I don't care if the Note 4 has better battery life or if the screen is better. From what I've seen its not better enough for me to deal with touchwiz.
