Google Nexus 6P Doze...unbelievable

Well this is unfortunately Day 2 of Doze not working for me overnight. What used to be a flat line for 8-9 hours is now a slowly declining one with a few sharp drops. Before I was losing 2-3% over an 8-10 hour sleep, now I am losing 8-9%. Not the end of the world, but 3-4 times worse than I was getting before with the same phone, so it's noteworthy. No changes whatsoever to the phone and that is a significant drop. The activity charts suggest that Doze is working (it turns WiFi off and shows the phone not "awake" except at a couple tiny intervals to grab notifications as it should), but the battery graph and my loss of battery percentage tells a different story. I have a replacement unit coming today or tomorrow due to the yellow/pink screen issues, so we'll see if it's any better.

Doze turns off WiFi as it is, so it makes no difference if you leave it on or off.

Anyone else figured out what was keeping their phone out of Doze yet?
Wow what a coincidence - I'm in the same boat as you Go0gle. This is the 3rd day where my phone has lost 10% overnight compared to 3-4% overnight 5 days ago. I'm still trying to narrow down the cause why Doze isn't as efficient as it was :/ I'm thinking it's an app I installed or updated in the past few days, but I have no idea which one it would be.

Totally agree - super weird. I have done literally nothing different to my phone over that time. Still, dispite my complaints, I am getting almost 2-day battery life out of this thing with 3-3.5hr screen-on time, and it takes an hour to re-charge, so really it's not a huge deal, but if some people are still getting 2% drops overnight, I should be too...

I am wondering if it has something to do with the DND schedule. Also with WiFi set to "always on during sleep" Doze still turns it off, but only at night, not during the day. Can't tell if that's coincidence or something do with my DND schedule which is set for about the same time as it turns WiFi off.

Yeah I was thinking that too! I just realised the only difference between when Doze was working and wasn't for me was that I enabled Priority notifications to auto-enable around midnight. I might try disabling that rule and seeing what happens tonight.

I got my RMA 6P last night, cloned my previous 6P, set up everything exactly the same, and I lost 2% from 10:30pm - 7:30am (9 hours). WiFi remained on during doze, which my previous 6P did not do under identical settings (super weird). The only thing different is this time I have *more* accounts set to sync, and I manually set DND, rather than a schedule. We'll see if this stays consistent or not, but either way the battery life is very good and doze is working as it should, but my previous one did too for about a week.

Wow... And I thought my 7% over 8 hours was good xD. Do also tell if your battery life is improved over the old one - then it might be telling of a hardware issue causing problems with battery efficiency

A week later, this device is significantly better than the iPhone 6. Maybe not better than the plus, but still great.

Day 2 with my second brand new phone, and it's doing the exact same thing as my first one. Lost 10% over an 8 hour sleep (2% over 9 hours the night before with literally identical settings). Has anyone figured this out yet? The only thing I can think of, is maybe it loses battery slower from 100% --> 80% kind of like the gas tank in a car, and then the last half falls faster. Shouldn't really happen though. That is a change of a factor of 5 with absolutely no changes other than the day of the week. I'd love to find out what's going on.

The only other thing I can think of, is maybe 2% every night is unrealistic. Is anyone getting that every single night, regardless of starting battery amount?

Another thing - exactly like my previous device, even when I manually turn WiFi off, it shows WiFi being on under the battery graph. Not sure if that's a false report or not.

Just sitting on my desk here for a couple hours this morning, I can already see it's back to dozing properly with a flat line. Super weird.

Re: Doze...unbelievable

Loving Doze too. Gotta say that losing very little battery life while idling is something that has been long enjoyed by the iOS camp and has always amazed me whenever I used my wife's iPhone 4S and iPhone 6, but it's great to see this feature finally available on Android.

Anyone else want to test something? Turn WiFi off manually, and see if it still shows up as active under the battery graph. Mine does.

To make it even more confusing, my last 6P turned off WiFi even though I left it on and forced awake, during the Doze period. I think my phones are just fu*king with me for the fun of it haha.

Regardless, WiFi on or off shouldn't affect doze.

The "awake" periods during my sleeps seem proper (just a tiny line every couple hours to grab notifications, which is how it's supposed to work), but the realized battery drain is inconsistent.

Re: Doze...unbelievable

If your old 5S was anything like my girlfriend's old 5S, and my current iPod Touch, it will say it's at 100% charged even when it isn't, and then all of a sudden I see very rapid battery drain, or find out it's almost dead, or watch it drop from 80% to 30% in 10 seconds while I'm using it. Seems to be an issue where the phone can't properly read the battery percentage, or maybe the battery was just old I have no idea. Anyway, I simply could not trust the battery %. Not saying this is what was happening to you or not, but it seems to be a fairly common issue with Apple products. My iPod still reports 100% charge until it dies.

you probably never synced your battery meter. you should drain it till it powers off about once a month to keep the % meter in sync. ive never had an iphone that didnt go 7-8 hours before loosing 1% on standby. thats will background refresh off and no auto syncing going on of course

They drained until they power off all the time, because the battery life was so bad haha. If that's all it takes to sync, I've synced it many times. I've also never had to sync a battery on any other device I've owned, phone or otherwise - not sure why Apple requires you to do this when no other manufacturer does. It's also not good for lithium batteries to be drained to zero, I would never intentionally do that to a phone I cared about.

I figured out my Doze issues, pretty sure there is a bug with the WiFi toggle.

I set my WiFi to stay on during sleep only when charging, so when Dozing it should shut it down. This time it actually turned off WiFi overnight, and i only lost 1% in 8 hours. Went to bed at 30%, woke up at 29%. You should not have to do this, as Doze is supposed to turn off WiFi, but it didn't for me.

I also think there is a bug with the WiFi graph, even with it manually turned off during the day, it shows WiFi on.

I also turned off the "follow me" feature in location settings, not sure if that made any difference either - I don't think it did because I've had it on before and only lost 2% overnight.

So, it looks like there is a bug with WiFi staying on even when manually turned off, and also when the phone tries to turn it off to Doze. Setting it to turn off during "sleep" in the advanced battery settings appears to have solved my issue. Doesn't seem to be using any data, so no worries there.

Still getting fantastic battery life so I'm assuming Doze is working for me. I l leave WiFi always on during sleep. I check what is using the battery every other day or so. Consistently, the screen uses the most, between 3% and 6% depending on how much I'm using it. On my Note 4, Android OS and Android system were consistently the biggest battery drains, often 10% or more each. Still ending each typical day with over 45% battery remaining.

Got the phone yesterday and set it all up minus putting my sim in(waiting for case and screen protector to use at work) and charged it to 100% before bed. I took it off the charger right before I went to sleep at about midnight and woke up at 5 am and it was still at 100%! That's ridiculous! For comparison I left my moto X pure edition with the same settings and apps installed, on my night stand overnight last weekend and it dropped from 78-50%. Pretty incredible

Still no issues for me - seems to be resolved by setting WiFi to turn off while Dozing, which has no effect on anything since it's supposed to turn off anyway while dozing (well not truly off, but go into a WiFi sleep mode). Currently 40 hours in from my last charge, and I have 63% battery left with fairly low screen on time (about 1.5 hours). I'm easily on track for another 72 hour charge interval, this thing is nuts.

I'm still trying to figure the dozing issue out in my Nexus 6P as I can't get it to doze, even by setting the Wi-fi off when sleep and for some weird reason I'm getting high battery usage from the Android OS (18%)

It would be nice if doze had a pocket option as well. The know it would affect fitness tracking. But that's what my watch is for. Doze in pocket, let watch track movement, then when I pull my phone out of my pocket it syncs up. Only time I want a call is when I am making one. Lol. Maybe there is a subsystem that keeps the phone active and shuts down the data part of the phone.

Wifi on all the time in the battery graph, even when its off, is due to the fact that Location scanning using wifi is on. look for scanning in Setting search or go to location options and hit overview button. Turn off wifi and bluetooth scanning.
