Google Nexus 7 and DSL router

Hey, newby question here.

I have a new Nexus 7 with Android JB 4.2.1 and a Siemens SL2 141 i DSL router.
At first the N7 could not find the wifi signal or connect. I updated the SL2 firmware.
Maybe that helped a bit, as the N7 recognized a wifi signal but it has no connectivity. But it let me start the setup.

I turned off the password (temp hopefully). However, there is a WEP key on the sticker on the router. (however, no possibility to type it in the N7 wireless connections).

Through my laptop I am connected to the same Siemens SL2 141 i DSL router, so the router works. However, the router came with an installation CD. Of course the N7 can not use that.

I can see the android device when I log into the DSL router (ip and mac address). And the N7can find the router, it seems (it says connected and has a IP address gateway, etc).

But only grey bars in the internet icon and a failure message when I try to open google chrome.

and yes, I turned everything off and on again (for our IT managers).

Any ideas how to get the internet to function? Helpful ideas appreciated.

I've also had the occasional issue with the N7 re-connecting to my home network. This is what seems to work the most reliably:

In your wifi settings, select the wifi network you're trying to connect to, and forget it. Turn Airplane mode on, and leave it for a minute or 2. Turn airplane mode off. Go to your wifi settings, and search for your network and sign in again. You should be good to go

Start to finish takes make 3 minutes.

hmm, now it doesn't work.

full disclosure, the WLAN router is from a German/Italian and now German company(Alice) and the software has been modified somewhat by Alice. To make it more confusing, I can find the router with the address of the router (186....) but still can not connect to the internet with the Nexus 7 (except for twice and I have been unable to exactly determine what I did to get online).

not to join conspiracy theorists, but if you make your software so f***ed up, you can certainly keep many many hotline staff employed (probably somewhere in Kosovo or Bombay), even if they can not find a solution, at 0.20?/minute.

I'm assuming you've done a full factory reset on both devices? (please backup your N7 first!)

What did the hotline technicians recommend and what solutions did you attempt?

Can you disable WiFi and dhcp on the DSL router and connect it to a second router to handle WiFi and dhcp? This would cleanly isolate your devices from the potentially flaky DSL router.

Well yes and no.

I updated the software for the router (siemens SL2 141 i with the newest Alice software). Off and on.
and the Nexus works for other wifi networks. I have shut it down (not just standby, I hate standby) which should restart it, I assume.

and i have as of yet avoided calling the hotlines.

jk, i do not possess a second router. i assume most folks need only one (that works).

My assumption is that the DSL provider has created a system that only allows computers with their access software to use the router. I have a CD of Alice software which is a bit useless for a Nexus 7. Should I create an executable (.iso) or something from the disc and try and get Android to run it?

I am moving in two months and hope to change internet providers. until then?

Something wireless is interfering with the router signal. In your routers menu there could be an option to expand the range of signals the router will connect too. I had to do this with my belkin router b/c the band it was connecting with drew interference with my wireless speaker set up in the house.

If they have some sort of CD my guess is that it is meant for PCs and not tablets. But you might open the network settings on your PC and ensure you N7's settings match. If they support only WEP I think you may have an issue with a Nexus device since I don't think they support WEP (which is kind of worthless security).

These sort of internet provider (IP) issues is why I only expect the internet provider to provide an ethernet port to which I can plug my gear. That lets the IP focusing on getting the service to your door and you can set up everything from that point the way you want it and not be at the mercy of some crappy IP provided router. Also, when you move you just need to plug your router into the new IPs box and you are done.

I refuse to buy devices that charge a fee for support
