Google Nexus and Google account problems

My Google Nexus 7 is driving me insane. After numerous attempts it won't sign me in to Google Play to buy Norton, after apparently signing in to my Google account OK. It says the password is incorrect. I can sign into Google on my PC with this password.

I have tried deleting the account and adding it again, and clearing data and caches for both Google Play and Play Services.
It looks as if the wallet is set up OK in spite of earlier giving me a message that my credit card was invalid.

I have tried resetting to factory settings and doing everything again but the same has happened. I earlier tried resetting the password to another one, which is the one which is letting me in to Google OK.

I honestly feel like getting a hammer to it!!

On the Settings screen it gives me a different account name for Google, which is the primary address for my Virgin email account but which I have never entered on the Nexus - we always use another alias. This appears even after I deleted the account and put it in again. and after I cleared the data and caches.

I am also getting a message that Sync is currently experiencing problems and will be back shortly.

HELP! Is it me or Google?

Hard reset the device. If that doesn't work contact Google for further advice. There's not much else I can think of.

Go a complete factory reset on the device and re-log back into your Google account from the initial start up.

After spending over an hour talking (luckily free!) to a second person on Nexus Support in Utah from UK, the person there could not find out why I could not use Google Play Store using my Google account with a blueyonder email address.

He then suggested opening a new Gmail.com account and logging the Nexus on with that. That did the trick and all is now OK including (just) my sanity.

I await a message from Nexus Support telling me why there was a problem - if he can ever find out.

I had already factory reset that 3 times and changed the Google account password 3 times !!!!! You can imagine my sanity was in doubt.....

The original address you had sounds like a business account. Due to that it may block non @gmail.com accounts from purchasing. Mind you this is a guess based on one of my business accounts used Google as email but address is @xyz.con
