Google Now cards

Is there a way to select what type of cards Google Now displays? I get tons of cards, most of which I'm not interested in. Thanks

When the card pops up, hit the 3 vertical dots in upper right hand corner. That gives you options to customize what cards you get or not.

I know I am new to this. Exactly what are Now Cards? Is it something that comes up after you tap an app icon? :-\
