My Google pay says it is set up with everything ok but when I hold the phone to a reader nothing happens . The only way it works is if I unlock the phone and open the Google pay app , this was on my pixel 2 , I have now changed to a pixel 3 and it is the same , I used to be able to just unlock the phone and it worked ok . Have Google changed something , all my default payment settings look correct ??????

I used mine yesterday, on my 4a 5G. I just unlocked the phone and held it to the payment terminal.

check the default settings and make sure you have google pay as default.

Used my 4a yesterday, fingerprint, terminal, done.
I'm glad that unlocking the phone is a mandatory first step. Just think if someone got a hold of your phone and could use Google Pay without having to provide a finger print or pin.

That's why I like Samsung Pay. You can access it from the lock screen by sliding up from the bottom and then using your fingerprint just to unlock payments. Unfortunately it's limited to Samsung.

Until the note fingerprint scan was moved to the screen, google pay was faster than samsung. I could pull the phone from my pocket, already have my finger over the scan and be logged in by the time the phone reached the terminal to scan.

I think the OP's issue, though, is that after unlocking the phone, he still has to manually open the Google Pay app, which you shouldn't have to do.
@Stephen White2, just to be sure, do you have the newer Google Pay app installed? Go to this Play Store page and see if has an Install button: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.nbu.paisa.user

Correct , I unlock the phone and hold it to the reader and nothing happens , so I then have to open google pay app and then it works , all my default settings are correct . I have been to play store and it is the latest version and no option to update .

Just curious -- when you're on the homescreen and you press and hold Power, do you get the Home control screen that also shows your Google Pay cards?

I just tried that and I just get Shutdown, Restart, Screenshot and Emergency. Google Pay works ok for me on my Nokia 7.2.

That totally new to me. Never seen it.
