Google Photos cannot access my device photos

When I open Google Photos, it only shows the pics I've taken in camera roll, if I select the folders on device, it keeps loading forever. I tried uninstalling the latest updates to see if the stock version works but same thing. I also ensured that it has all permissions in the apps and it does. I googled this problem and it seems to be like a common problem. What to do? I really need to make it work
This is on my Nexus 6P running Marshmallow 6.0.1

I gave up on this crappy app and just installed Aviary instead! Way better

It sounds like the Media Storage system app is hanging on a file somewhere. Worth fixing even if you've got an alternative as Media Storage if still stuck on a scan will be eating your battery. Clear Cache and Data on Media Storage and reboot. Make sure you reset your ringtones afterwards.

If it happens again you've got some dodgy media somewhere on your phone.
