Hey.

Don't know if anyone else is having this issue; when I'm trying to add my Whatsapp Images folder to the backup and sync within the new Photos app I keep getting "Unfortunately, Google Play Services have stopped working". I have uninstalled, wiped cache and reinstalled and tried restarting my advice. Any ideas how to fix this, or is it a glitch? Whatsapp Video folder is fine.

Thanks :)

Hm.. I wonder if Whatsapp is causing the issue. Try clearing the cache on the Whatsapp app and see what happens.

Hi - same issue here.
I have tried disabling/re-enabling services and apps, clearing caches and data etc all to no avail.
I can neither check the box for WhatsApp in the Device Folder tab within the Photos app, nor tap to activate the Cloud icon within the backup tab.
Each time, Google Play Services crashes.

The only workaround I had was to create a new album in my phone gallery and move all the WhatsApp images from their original folder into that one - then of course the backup begins. I guess it's a good enough workaround - you'll just need to periodically move images to that folder. Better than nothing.

In terms of why it's happening - I'm lost there.

LG G2 running KK 4.4.2 (D80220f) stock rooted.

Thanks.

Hi, i have the same problem and i already tried everything to solve it, do you know if google or whatsapp are going to fix it? Thk

Not adding anything necessarily constructive here, but this is happening for me as well. There are minimal third party apps, and the default SMS. However, when I attempt to add a folder to backup automatically under the "settings - device folders" area, it switches to the 'blue cloud' icon (as if it was going to synchronize), then gives me the "Google Play Services Has Stopped Working *Because It Hates You.*" (I obviously added the last part.) I've cleared cache on Google Play Services, uninstalled Google Photos, reinstalled, restarted, cleared cache, rinse & repeat many times, but to no avail. Please please update if anyone finds out anything new!

I have the same issue with my moto x 2014 and solved it by the following steps

1. Uninstall update of google play services in "settings - apps" menu
2. Clear catch
3. Add google account in "settings - account" menu (google account will be deleted during "clear catch" in step 2 above).
4. Update google play services from Play Store.
5. Enable photo backup service in google photos settings.
6. Select backup whatsapp photo folder from the photos backup setting.

Thanks marbillphone for the hint.

I even found an easier way.

1. Clear cache and data of the Photos app (settings - apps)
2. Clear cache of the Google Play Service and further click on "Manage space" and there "clear all data" (settings - apps)
3. Run Google Photos, select your account and stuff, go to options (left upper corner), select device folders and click on the cloud next to the WhatsApp Images
4. Done, it should work now.

I've been struggling on my HTC One M8 GPe phone with the updated Photos app exiting within seconds of starting, but I don't have the WhatsApp app on my phone, so that isn't a factor for me, at least.

I went through the procedure as you described, and it continued to fail as before, but a reboot cleared up the problem, at least temporarily. Thanks for posting. I have a feeling that there is some underlying problem at work here, so it likely will reoccur, but at least this procedure might provide a workaround for the problem. Thanks for posting it.

I'm also having this issue however I don't have whatsapp. It just crashes randomly since update.

I don't have WhatsApp on my phone, either, but the suggested procedure worked for me (see my post immediately preceding yours). Mine wasn't crashing randomly, though - it constantly exited within a second or two.

just rename the whatsapp folder and it backs up just fine with no crashes and without having to reset anything. maybe not ideal but really simple til an update rolls out.

Thanks, this worked perfectly for a folder on my sd card. I think it had too much media in it ~40gb.
