Google Photos suddenly backing up thousands of old images

I'm not sure what was going on, but last night, Google Photos on my phone (after I'd taken a few dozen new photos during the day) suddenly said it was backing up 1500 photos. All the photos I had before yesterday had already been backed up. A momentary glitch? Some kind of last minute help before killing off free storage? This is on an S20 FE.

Welcome to Android Central! Did you just recently download a whole bunch of backed up photos to the phone's storage? If so, Google Photos might have identified them as "new" photos that haven't been backed up yet.

Nope. I haven't done anything to the photos. And when I looked at the list of photos, some of them were quite old, going back to last year. Very weird.

Do you have Google's backup app installed on a PC? Could it have detected new photos saved there?

Hi, this suddenly started to happen to me too...
I have don't anything in my Google photos app.
It wants to backup already backed up photos from the past.
Any suggestions? Who can I contact?

Welcome to Android Central! Do you also have an S20? Open your Photos app, tap your profile pic at the upper right, then the Backup option. Does it show you all of the photos that are waiting to backup? If so, select one and see where it's currently stored.

Did you previously use the Free Up Space option in Google Photos, or did you keep all of your photos saved to the phone's storage, even after they were backed up?
