Google Pixel 5a - A tempting value option or just left over old tech?

So I'm visiting New York and popped into the Google store in Chelsea. I was able to finally see in person the Google Pixel 5 in Sage and the new Google Pixel 5A. I have to say after playing with both in person for a while I don't feel I'm missing much (experience wise) compared to my Google Pixel 4A. Perhaps I hyped myself up too much but now I don't see a reason to upgrade to either of these devices. Perhaps that speaks volumes to the quality of the 4A. Regardless at some point I may upgrade but I'm willing to now wait to see what the 6 series will offer.

Regarding the new Pixel 5A cases, to me they feel really cheap and quite slippery. Bring back the fabric cases!

I definitely think so! The 5a needs it's very own thread alongside all the other Pixel devices. :)

I'm sure we can get various sub-threads with some camera photos, case suggestions, potential bugs and tons more.
I just mentioned in another thread , 5a getting its own forum soon.

Question? Could you test the macro shots ? Can it get super close like an s21 ultra can? This is the only thing keeping me from buy is that I don't know how good macro is.

There's no macro function. It has a digital zoom at 2x, but it's nothing to get excited about.

Definitely left over tech. I have a theory as the the dark green color. Google likely just took the left over black and sage bioresin from the Pixel 5 a lot less sage than black mixed them and here we are with a mostly black Pixel 5a.

Interestingly enough I saw the Pixel 5A in person and I saw no hint of green. Then again this was inside of a store so perhaps the lighting didn't help. I would only recommend this as an upgrade for anybody on the 3A series of Pixels or if you just have money to splurge or absolutely have to have water resistance but as an upgrade from the previous 4A lines, I don't feel it necessary. For what it offers at it's price point, it still is a pretty awesome device!

The Pixel 5a--A tempting value or left over tech?

It's both. The tech is two years old but it's solid. It has the Google software integration with Pixel experience that owners know and love. It has the marvelous camera. This version of Pixel has a massive battery. That's the top three things I'm looking for in a phone--feature packed and easy to use software, giant battery, and stellar camera. Pixel 5a delivers this.

I'm getting the 5a because my four year old 2XL's camera developed problems. It's hardware related. Another problem is the battery is showing charge/recharge fatigue but it still gets me through a full day with some juice to spare. I would have kept using it for another year and then gotten a Pixel 6 (or maybe a 7.) But I need a phone with a camera so Pixel 5a is it. It's supposed to arrive today.

I'm still trying to decide whether or not to get this or the pixel 6.... decisions decisions

So I returned my 5a. I just wanted to practice ordering something when it was announced, to make sure I have it down when the 6 comes out. :)

I think that's a pretty good deal for a quality pure Android 5G phone made by Google, with their legendary software support which might be going out to 5 years if the rumors pan out, and a camera that still takes great pictures unless you're a professional photographer lol. Seems like a lot of solid phone for $450.

I always wait a year or so and pick up last years flagships for around the same price as the mid-rangers. I like my flagships, I just don't like the flagship prices ;)

I usually do the same but the 5 is gone! There are no deals on it!

$600 in "good" condition. For the extra $99 I would rather new. This 3XL needs another battery. The replacement has only lasted 6 months. I may just pick up a 6
Oh wow 600 for "good" condition , yeah wait and see the 6 price .

There are pixel 5's in the Google store. It just let me click on buy and go all the way to check out...
