As many people are saying, it all comes down to the user. These photos are taken by professionals, with all the fancy lighting and stuff. Looking forward to seeing some average user shots

Interesting. I was able to right click and save it right from Chrome. What issues are you running into?
What fancy lighting do you think they are using? There's no hot shoe to attach a flash, so most aren't going to bother with a slave unit.

Right. Knowing HOW to use the available light is the more appropriate way to describe how pics with cellphones are taken. While some people like to say that pros can use any junk camera technology and take great photos, they are exaggerating a bit. Pros know how to use the equipment to its maximum capability but within the technical limitations, some of which are not limited to the camera tech (i.e. lighting, contrast ratio, etc.). Nonetheless, the photos shown off by Google is the same as every other manufacturer: They send pros out who know how to use available light, know how to compose/frame a photo and, equally importantly, know when to not even bother trying.
It's that last part that matters more than most people think.
Well I could see them using something to reflect a bit of light onto the subjects in the sunset shot.

And using reflectors is definitely cheating if you're trying to demonstrate the "average joe" quality pic. I can't disagree there.

That's cheating for promotional purposes? Who says they are trying to show "average joe" quality pics?
They are only going to try to show what the camera is capable of. No different than say Sony or Canon putting out advertising material for one of their actual cameras.
If they were using reflectors, the pictures will be giving you the sense that the camera's HDR did a great job with the shadows when actually light was being placed on the subjects face in order to reduce the shadow.

ALL manufacturers do it, including Apple. I'm just stating what should be the obvious in that the photos shared by any manufacturer are the cream of the crop and sometimes artificially aided (external filters, props, etc.). So for the "average Joe" looking to get similar shots "out of the box" is unfair to the consumer because, from their abilities, it's cheating.
I'm saying using reflectors like he does in that video could have been used to misrepresent the HDR capabilities of the camera.
