Google play auto update not working

I'm rather new to android... set option for apps to auto update, and it worked for a few weeks. Now it doesn't. Found almost 40 updates waiting today! Auto update is still set. Any ideas?

Welcome to Android Central! Is Google Play Store set to auto-update over wi-fi only, or at any time?

Wifi only, but I'm almost always connected to Wifi...

And it's an active wi-fi connection? As opposed to a public wi-fi network that you have to sign into on a login page.

How long have you waited to see if it auto updates? It might wait for some arbitrary interval before it auto-updates.

Always active private high speed WiFi. At the beginning it always updated and sent notifications. Now never. Had over 40 updates waiting! And another batch today not even getting notifications that updates are waiting!

Which device do you have? It may be worth wiping the cache partition, if possible on your device.
