Google play store wont update.

I can't get my play store to open. I have already gone to settings, and pressed the build number, and it said the apk would be downloaded and installed, but after waiting for hours, it still didn't update. Are there conditions that have to be met? like does it have to be charging, locked and connected to wifi? because I met those conditions. If this does not work, is there an official way to download the playstore apk without getting a virus?
