It's the Auto Backup feature. You can turn it off by opening the Photos app, tapping the Menu button, then Settings, then Auto Backup, and turn the switch off.

Auto Backup can be a very useful feature for users who don't routinely backup their photos. I can't tell you how many posts I've seen on this forum from people who are upset because they just lost thousands of photos on their phone due to some glitch!

B Diddy is right. Way too many people are looking for a way to retrieve their pictures after dropping their phone in water or bricking it. The auto backup feature is super handy. No one else can see your photos unless you choose to share them. I personally love it. I delete a bunch of pictures every so often just cause I have them saved on Google plus. I understand if you don't want them saved there, it's easy enough to turn the feature off. Just throwing my 2 cents in.

By default the Photos backed up to your Google+ account are private, so the auto-backup will not have any affect on what others can see or access about your account unless you share the photo after they're uploaded.

The only real downside for someone not really interested in this feature is affect on battery/resources which doesn't seem too bad, especially if you set it to wifi-only uploads.

Why not? It's very handy. You won't lose your photos if something happens to your phone, and you won't have to worry about transferring your pics from one phone to the next when you get a new one (or a tablet).

And if you set it to back up only when charging, it really doesn't affect your battery at all.

OK...I hear what you all are saying and thanks for the replies.

One thing I did notice is that let's say I decide to delete a photo from the gallery app on my phone, I see it also automatically deletes from Google + as well........So, if something were to crash or happen to the phone wouldn't those pics be lost on G + as well? Seems like it is just emulating the Gallery app and not a true back up.......please correct me if i'm wrong or if that just has to do with settings.

Thanks

That hasn't been my experience at all. I have to delete the same pics from Google + separately. But I would think that in this case, you would have to select "delete" for it to carry over to Google +. A crash or bricking your phone wouldn't trigger that. Mind you, this is all speculation. I could be wrong.

The "Photos" app with the 4 different colored triangles is the Google+ Photos app and it warns you that it will delete the photo in both locations.

The "Gallery" app only deletes the copy locally stored on your phone.

If you want to play it really safe, use a file manager such as ES File Explorer to delete photos off of only the phone.
However, the Gallery app will not affect your Google+ account photos.

Thanks for replies above, but I must disagree.....when I delete a photo from just the gallery app on the phone it also automatically deletes from G+.....I just took a pic and tried this, the pic is automatically saved in G+ but when deleted in Gallery App on phone it is also deleted in G+......

Any Ideas, I'm just trying to understand how this works as a viable back up?

That's not the case. The gallery app can't sync to google+ either way.

Also in photos you can delete items only off your device and leave then backed up on google+. Expand the left menu then go to "on device"

Well....my gallery app is syncing to Google +, don't know what to tell ya. The auto back up is turned off in G + as well. I may just have to go in to the AT&T store and have someone show me what's up....

Are you sure you tried to delete with the Gallery and not with Photos? When I delete from the Gallery, it deletes only from the phone. When I delete from the Photos app, it deletes from both Photos and Google+.

This is exactly how it works for me as well. I always use the gallery app when I just want to delete my local copy and not the backup.

I am only deleting from the "Gallery" app, what's the photos app?

The top one is the stock gallery app that comes on the phone. The bottom right one is the Google + photos app. If your photos are deleting from Google + when you delete them from the stock gallery app, I would do a factory data reset or take it back to the store. The auto backup function is just that, a "backup". It should not be deleting them in both places.

Yep, that's the gallery app I use. Never even touched the photo app before. So when I delete a photo from the gallery app it also deletes from G+...... Guess i'm going to the store!

This is strange. When I delete a photo from my gallery app it does not affect my Google+ photos at all. This goes for my Moto X and my Nexus 10 tablet.

I think Google actually removed the ability for gallery to sync with Picasa a long time ago. It literally shouldn't be possible for them to sync a delete.
