I use GT for texting, but I can't figure out how to get the gray android character beside my contacts in chats, to become their picture. If I go to the list of contacts in GT, and long press, I can see pictures that are available within Contacts, but can't figure out how to assign the pictures within GT.

The only contact I have in Google Talk with a picture, it uses his Google + picture.

Pictures are whatever the user assigns. It can be pulled in from google+ if they have an account. I don't believe it is possible to assign your own picture.

ah. I haven't gotten to google + in my attempts to get pictures functional. I'll give that a try. I had been trying both on the phone and on my PC, using Contacts in Gmail. I was able to assign images to my contacts (and see them update on the phone in a few moments), but none have shown up in Talk convos. I'll report back later after giving G + a go.

darn, I keep getting errors in google + that it can't communicate with the server. I've tried over a dozen times.

partial success. I got a test image to show up in chats for myself. that's half the battle. :)

This is very frustrating. I got my pic on my Google Talk, and my pic shows up on my contact's screen when I chat with them. I set up a picture for their profile, and the picture shows up on their phone, both at the top of the Talk screen, and within the body of the chats, but I never can see their picture when chatting with them, nor do I see their picture in my Talk contacts list. WTH???

Did you friend each other in google + or did your friend set some heavy privacy settings up?

To add to this thread...Why doesn't Google Talk (GT) show up in the Android Market for downloading to other Android phones? I have a couple friends that would like to dl it so we can chat. Is it hard coded in the Bionic? I know nothing about phone chatting, the Bionic is the only phone I have that had it on already. Can people using iTalk (or whatever they use), Tango, or Skype, talk to me over GT?

Which phone is this? If the phone is "with Google" I think it *has* to have Google Talk pre-installed. It was on my Eris. I think that Talk and the Market will always be pre-installed. (It is called "Talk" in the application tray; if they are looking for "Google Talk" they will not find it.)

Thanks folks...but when I search under "talk" it won't come up in the Market? It came on my Bionic and I just figured it was another app other Android users would have as well. Doesn't have to be 2.3.4 in order to work?

Like I said, if the phone is a Google market phone, it will have Google Talk (or just Talk, as I said) already preinstalled. It was on my Eris version 1.5 and 2.1. It's not in the market, because it is preinstalled on the phone. Always. It's on the phone. The only way that it is not on the phone is if the phone was rooted and the app was removed.

Gmail used to be this way as well - it wasn't on the market until after Froyo was released.

Ok, thanks, I understand now...it's so strange that Google doesn't have an app for other Android phones to download and use.
