Google to acquire Motorola Mobility

My reaction to this news cannot be stated here due to the prolific use of profanity.

I'll just say this: I think this is the wrong move for Google to make, and it is going to set in motion a number of very serious inquiries into the company's business practices that could result in the end of Google as we know it. I understand their desire to get a hold of Motorola's patents; but is it really worth putting your entire empire at risk?

If the ones that joined up to buy the Nortel patents will be fine if its ruled invalid...Google will too. Set top boxes...Google TV...makes sense to me. Android...Motorola....makes sense to me.

MS can buy Nokia's phone business and its no problem. Whats the big deal about Google?

Yes sir, and from what I read, Tablets are a big key in this purchase from the patent side.

I replied to your last post, but I think it got pulled. I humbly diagree about the struggling part. Cheers. Can't argue anymore, as I know you don't care for it. Just let me know in a couple of weeks how you like your new bionic.

It's all good brother, it just was unneccesary. Remember there are litle kids who frequent the forums and while we don't mind the language, it's inappropriate.

Why am I getting the Bionic again? Because I won't be able to resist it? lol

I've had an upgrade available for a year now I'm surely not going to blow it on just any device. Bionic was on the list but fell off a while back. Enjoy your Bionic!

Man bro, be honest, what if the Bionic had a SA+ screen? Would you jump in then considering today's acquisition?

Count me in on the side seeing this as way cool news.

The only casualty I see would be motodev, although android development is a big tent with plenty of room for everybody. Unless google deliberately forbids it.

Also, as to patents; besides the patents specifically held by motorola mobility there may be agreements regarding patents held by other current and former motorola business units.

Meaning that when motorola split their semiconductor division off to form Freescale, or when motorola mobility and motorola solutions separated, there is pretty good odds that the new separate entities wrote up licences enabling them to use tech covered by patents held by the other new entities.

Otherwise, prior to separating, they would have had to research every bit of intellectual property they had been using and then stop using any tech covered by a patent held by the other new entity.

Unless motorola mobility's articles of incorporation state that there agreements with other motorola entities become null and void if they are acquired, then the licences would be grandfathered in to google.

Google would be able to use motorola solutions tech covered by a preexisting license; its just that google would not have standing to sue if apple infringed on the same tech, only motorola solutions could sue.

Still, hoping for good things.:)

negative. Bloat (WebTop), blur and locked down. When they build a phone devoted to enthusiast's I'll be back on board but until then there's too many other "better" choices for me.

Don't say it will be unlocked neither lol. I don't beleive this device will ever see an unlocked bootloader.

That is the beauty! Who is going to be they! I am not sure if it will, but I remain with Confucius for now.

Not sure about that, in fact, I jump the gun often. But damn, remember the OG days, when a little Google stamp was on the back of that slider everyone loved or hated? Days have come along, and the times have changed my friend....I can't keep up anymore....I throw a towel. WTF!

F yeah! Mine works half the time, and believe me, if it were built in Taiwan it would have died long ago. Something about that black and gold, ha ha!

Very good points sir, very good points. Feel free to cuss my PM box up.

I also believe that it makes Google look mighty hypocritical in light of their recent statements on the patent system. I understand that they need to protect themselves and their manufacturers, but it also undermines the very legitimate points they may have.

Well, Apple is the rich kid from California. (I lived in NorCal, so I can and will go there) And if it were up to them, the world would have one OS. They are on a witch hunt, and are taking names. It is nice at least one can hang and fight, because if not, then what?

I don't see the hypocrisy - I see the difference between protecting yourself from lawsuits v. using legal challenges to stifle your competitors.

I also don't recall any statements Google made "on the patent system", I may have missed it, I only recall Google making statements about Apple and Microsoft perverting the patent system to thwart competition.

I think this is great news and hopefully in the future Google will have more say so on the Moto phones.

I'd much rather see competition. Without competition, products are half assed. Look at the first 3 iPhones, there wasn't much added in between each one other than 3G. Then Android started stepping up and Apple was like "well we're screwed if we don't actually do something on this release."

I don't see your point. It's like being picked on as a kid... you can get picked on and beat up for as long as you don't have a defense. But, once you start fighting back a few times, people will stop just because they know you will fight back.

Just because Google has 25,000 patents in it's stable now doesn't mean they are going to stoop to Apple and Microsoft's level and file a suit against anyone who tries to compete against them. Also, Apple and Microsoft have said that they would attack those who make handsets for Android so Google needs to be able to protect those manufacturers so they are not persuaded to go to the dark side (WP7). It's just good business to try to deny one of your biggest competitors their primary source of mobile OS income... especially when it's your OS!

As far as apple goes... they make good products, but trying to file suit against anyone who tries to compete is just low... What happened to the days when Patent Trolling was for, well, Patent Trolls. I hope this acquisition by Google can put a stop to this madness.

I'm still waiting for Google to buy RIM to access their enterprise business and the Nortel patent portfolio... that is, if the courts still allow the sale to stand.

Google has made claims that, in essence, boil down to the argument that the patent system is broken. Some people deep into IP stuff may disagree because they're in the thick of it, but I know a lot of people who look at the issue agree that there are some very serious issues.

WebTop is bloat to a lot of people, to some it's not. To me and you (and probably 95% of people on here) it is. I wish they would be better about it - I simply don't need a phone with it on it. Oh well. Then again, in day-to-day I highly doubt it will hurt my use of the phone.

The new blur is allegedly halfway decent (I've read reviews where people claim it actually is useful. That's a plus but also an indictment of just how bad blur has been), but I'd still prefer the option of putting something like that in rather than having it forced down my throat.

On the bootloader being unlocked, I will bet you'll see one, just not soon. I'd say you're talking 6+ months at minimum.

Still, I think these points (in addition to the screen for some) are the biggest reasons people may shy away from the Bionic. While none of these will change in the immediate future, some of them (save the screen) could simply be eliminated 6-12 months from now if Google steers the "independent" Moto in a different direction.

FWIW, IMHO, Patents are necessary and the USPTO does the best they can, although they have problems. The real problem is the U.S. District Court judges who have to rule on patent cases are simply not competent when it comes to technology issues.
