Google voice typing doen't work offline although enabled

[Android Central Question]

I've been trying out google voice typing and it works fine while there is an internet connection. When the connection is cut however, it doesn't work anymore. When I press the mic button, it bleeps, shows "Initializing..." for a split second and then goes back to non-voice typing mode.

My phone:
Xiaomi 9 SE
MIUI 11.0.6
Android 9 PKQ1.181121.001
Gboard latest build
English (US) and German latest offline voice packages installed

This is what I have already tried:
1) ensured that "use voice typing" is enabled in keyboard setttings
2) ensured that keyboard default language and voice typing default language match (English (US))
3) uninstalled all offline speech recog packs and reinstalled only default language
4) cleared data on Gboard app
5) disabled multilingual typing (just in case that was messing it up)
6) disabled/reenabled "use voice typing"

No joy on any of these and those were all the possible solutions I could find on the interwebs.

Any help is highly appreciated!

@VidJunky not same poster, but exact same issue :/ Their solution doesn't work for me though, since I don't have a Samsung/SVoice. I checked if there might be similar conflicting inputs from the xiaomi side of things, but it's only the gboard, nothing else.

Exactly the same problem on Moto G5plus. Gboard voice typing works perfectly while online, but without an internet connection it doesn't. The microphone just says "Initializing...". Solution that worked for me: uninstall Gboard updates. With the previous Gboard version, voice typing works online as well as offline.
