ok I successfully rooted an optimus V phone with superoneclick and adb shell. And how nice was it to see "Running a SU test.......Success !" so of course I went ahead and downloaded superuser and titanium backup as per the tutorial I used. everything checks out. so what's next??? getting Root without doing something nifty is pretty worthless. so... I think I am going to go with an optimized stock rom as suggested to limit headaches for now.

Some tutorials suggest backing things up. Some talk again activating the storage feature and start adding rom's to the sd card. etc... all I know that titanium backup doesn't care much for the stock rom as it is. By the way do I need to worry about changing the kernel?

I am planning on going with Harmonia for this optimus V, if that helps, for a rom.

awesome. I really appreciate that. a few steps closer to my over all questions. AWESOME !! Thank you ! any other advice is definately welcomed.

If you want gingerbread, which is just slightly less stable than 2.2.2, but a lot faster, go with aospCM7.

what are the current downfalls/bugs with aospCM7 verses say something like bumblebee or harmonia? as well as the perks? thanks.

Bluetooth doesn't work properly yet, and you can't use a wired headset during a call. There are a few other bugs, but aospCMmod is well built, and bugs are being squashed all of the time.

Benefits include:
- the ability to download themes from the android market(make sure it supports mdpi devices)
- Built in overclocker
- built in music widget on lockscreen
- Lockscreen is easy to customize
- Notification Power Widget in the notification bar.
- all kinds of other goodies from Cyanogen.

The froyo roms are very nice as well(only tested Bumblebee when I wanted something different. It worked very well), but I've been using the gingerbread roms since they've came out.

well I have a couple of these to do honestly. mine I will probably go with bumblebee or harmonia for now as I use a BT all the time and it'd be tough to adjust without it since I often use it for work to make life easier. even a wired ear piece would be ok though kinda a pain. now the other phone is for a friend and he has no desire to use an ear piece at all. so as long as keys are mapped accordingly and he can make and recieve calls, text, mms/sms, play music, and vids he's a pretty happy camper.

ok fellas this is where I'm stuck. I know I have root and Superuser is installed and workin. I opened superoneclick to get the adb shell to run from cmd prompt. so everything looked good till this point.

i'm not sure if I am just brain dead or if I am missing something. rooting wasn't bad. downloading superuser and titaniumbackup ...walk in the park. but this custom recovery before installing the rom is kickin my can. the help is much appreciated. thanks.

You are closer than you think. ;) Right now, you don't seem to have the flash_image file for your recovery. Which recovery are you using?

Easy method for installing recovery and ROM once you have root:

1- install Android Terminal Emulator from the market
2- place the recovery image and ROM zip file you want to use on your sdcard
3- open Android Terminal Emulater and type the following commands (on the second line, replace recovery.img with the name of your recovery file):
su
flash recovery recovery.img
reboot recovery
4- Choose backup and create a nandroid backup (this is what will save you if you run into problems)
5- In recovery, wipe caches, factory reset, advanced>wipe dalvick cache
6- Choose apply update and select your ROM's zip file
7- Reboot (will take longer than usual, that's ok)

And your done

does the flash_image have to match the thunder recovery img? maybe that's my problem. I downloaded them seperately. I was useing thunder 1.2.0 recover img

Use the recovery that the dev of the ROM you want to install uses. Each ROM has it's own scripting issues during install, and a couple require a particular recovery.

Which ROM are you planning on installing?

harmonia, only because it is stable, allow BT use, no remapping of keys etc. if not that one than bumblebee. I still want the activation ability, speed tweaks, no bloatware, access to google apps, cpu overclocking, etc. I would go gingerbread but for my personal use it seems a little buggy at this point. but once I have this up and going, you can bet I'll be playing with others real soon.

actually as mine will be used for everything from BT ear piece for calls to sms to surfing the web to playing angry birds, and make normal calls, so I need it to be solid. I would like things like bloatware gone, activation to be present, cpu overclocking available, any other speed tweaks, as little of remapping as needed (I'm not ready for that yet)...so I am absolutely up for suggestions. and I love TOYS...so I know that is asking alot to help me pick...but I'm all ears. Thanks again for the help.

I think Harmonia or Rodimus would be best for you. Check out their threads, the original posts will list which recovery to use.

The flash image file just has to be placed on your sdcard, then flashed with adb or the terminal. Once you flash it, the old one will be gone.
